2004 ultra.
under moderate to hard accelleration in first and second gear the bike sputters, coughs and sounds like its sucking air ...kinda like a carb bike. In 4 and 5 everything is fine. This started out of the blue last year. no changes to the bike. Since, I have changed plugs, wires and fuel filter.
Maybe a small intake flange seal leak, more vaccum under hard accel causing it to suck air, less vaccum under low load in high gear might not be enough to make it suck air. Its just a guess
+3. That's where I would start. Start your bike, let it idle and spray some carb cleaner up into the intake (spary from the air filter side right up between the jugs). If it starts to caugh on you there's your problem. If that's not it, I would go to the tank next. Have the fuel pressure tested. I have found a few that had tiny pinholes wear through the fuel line inside the tank, causing the bike to run lean. My money would be on either of them. If your bike is low on fuel, you can open the tank lid, cycle the ignition on and listen in the tank for fuel spraying. Or you can just take it somewhere that has a fuel pressure gauge that hooks up to the fuel line under the tank.
