To anyone that lives in Az., I am going on a business trip next week, and will be staying in Phoenix. I will be staying an extra week and renting an Ultra, and would like to do some riding and see the sites. (I will have the bike for 4 full days).
Any advice on "must do" rides? I want to see as much as possible in the time I have there. I would like to do all day trips, (Long days are fine), as we have a hotel downtown.
Any advice you guys could give me I would appreciate,
I-17 N to Carefree Hwy, Carefree Hwy W to US-60 W. US-60 W to Wickenburg. In Wickenburg take US-93 N about 5 miles to AZ-89 N. AZ-89 N will take you up Yarnell Hill, through Yarnell, Peeples Valley, Wilhoit and into Prescott.
Prescott is a cool old western town that was the provinical capitol of AZ. Whiskey Row is a solid city block of bars and places to eat.
Leaving Prescott, either take AZ-69 S to I-17 S and back to Phoenix, or AZ-89A through Prescott Valley then over Mingus Mtn to Jerome. Jerome is an old mining town built on the side of a mountain. It is very popular with bikers on the weekends.
Go through Jerome and down the hill to Cottonwood, bear left through Cottonwood and Sedona is less than 20 miles N. Stay on 89A through Jerome, Oak Creek Canyon and go up the hill to Flagstaff.
You can do this in a half day if you head back after Prescott. If you go to Flagstaff, you will be looking at close to a full day, depending on how much sightseeing you do.
The rides suggested above are great ones. Here's another:
Get on I-10 East (toward Tucson) and exit onto US60 East thru Tempe, Mesa, Apache Junction. Stay on US60 thru Superior and Globe and head up thru Salt River Canyon on 60/77 to Show Low. Head west on 260 toward Payson. In Payson take 87 South all the way back into the valley. Take 202 west into Phoenix. Probably around a 350-mile loop.
To see the route, use Google Maps and enter these destinations: Phoenix, Globe, Show Low, Payson, Phoenix.
