I have been getting a loud noise (banging) when starting my 08 Anniversary Ultra, especially when hot. I am out of warranty and have 23k miles on the bike.
Everything I have read in this forum suggests that it is the compensator sprocket. I took the primary cover off and everything looks normal.
Does anyone know what the specs are for the compensator to confirm that it is the problem? I would hate to replace the compensator and it not be the fix.
Also, I can do the work myself and have the service manual for reference. The manual states that I should not use an air impact wrench to remove the bolt for the compensator. I have also read how difficult it can be to remove with a breaker bar. Anyone have any experience with the impact wrench. Seems like the obvious way to do it then use a torque wrench to tighten.
Any help will be appreciated.
The loud bang is the compensator bottoming out. It's (unfortunately) a normal sound for the 2007-2010 bikes with the old style compensator. I believe all the 2011 touring bikes got the SE compensator.
I changed to the SE compensator over the winter, and the startup bang went away.
Here's a thread with some pictures of the install Davessworks and I did on my bike earlier this year.
Great info guys. Did any of you use an air impact to remove the compensator nut? I guess the concern is damaging the magnets in the alternator or is there some other risk?
I'll be changing mine soon due to similar symptoms (parts in the mail). A question for those who have done it. Rather than using the primary locking tool (or some other similar object) can anyone think of a reason that putting the bike in gear and someone standing on the brake wouldn't allow for the removal of the compensator bolt?
You can easily get the bolt off using a long ratchet and a piece of pipe slipped over the ratchet handle for leverage. I changed out mine in my 08 Ultra the same way. I've had the stock comp, EVO 30T sprocket and now the SE comp in it since I went with the 49T ring gear conversion and used that method each time.
At 42k miles i had the comp changes, ground bracket, high torque starter all under warranty and it still acts up every once in a while but it's much better...i went with the stock comp...
