Going to be in Phoenix, AZ next week and want to rent a bike for the day and do some riding. Anybody give me some suggestions for any good day rides in the area. Only have 1 day to rent a bike, wish I could get more time.
Head up to Tortilla Flats, there is a road side eatery there that's really cool. Cant remember the name but its well known. North of Superstition Mountain if I recall.
Go east on US-60 to Globe. At Globe take US-188 past Roosevelt Lake/Tonto Basin. There's several small towns where you can stop for lunch or gas. There's a cool biker hangout (Jake's Corner) about 3 miles from AZ-87. When you get to AZ-87 (Beeline Hwy), turn left and head back to the Valley. It's about a 240 mile round trip.
If you take slhanks4's advice, you might consider staying on 60 east of Globe for a ways until you come to SaltCreek Canyon. A really pretty ride through a smaller version of the Grand Canyon!
You can do a nice 300-mile loop that includes Salt River Canyon. If you use Google Maps just enter these destinations: Phoenix, Globe, Show Low, Payson, Phoenix.
You may also consider going up to Prescott for a 200-mile loop. Using Google Maps, enter these destinations: Phoenix, Wickenburg, Prescott, Phoenix. I'd alter Google's route by eliminating US60 through the west side of Phoenix (too many lights), and instead head north on I-17 to SR74, Carefree Highway, and take that west to US60.
