I bought a used 09 ultra in March and have since ridden about 2200 miles incident free. Yesterday, I took a 360 mile ride. After a short stop I could not get the bike to turn over. A puff of black smoke followed what seemed like difficulty cranking, normally associated with a weak battery.
The voltometer shows proper charge and I have not had any probs in the 3 subsequent starts. I feel like the bike runs hot and maybe a bit lean, but don't know if that would cause the start issue. I have an oil cooler, se race tuner and bike had its 5k service before I bought it.
If all the connections are good, sounds like a bad starter, but there are other possibilites, some mechanical.
Ensure the engine turns over freely. Put bike in 3rd gear or higher and roll it forward and release the clutch. Engine should turn over freely. Actually, you could take the plugs out and try it. If it doesn't, you have something else going on in engine or primary case
