People that think plugs today are not white are living in the past. Todays fuels are different and reading plugs like in the old days is not the same. could be not enough fuel or to much timing or a combo of both. It could be caused by a little carbon build up on the pistons causing an increase in CR.
I had an 04 EGC that I had on the dyno many times and it had perfect afr at WOT and at all cruise ranges and spark plugs were white. Only way to tell if it is in too lean is by doing an AFR check.
Too bad more folks aren't in the know, exhaust gas analysis is the only way to know your AFR for sure. I also have a near perfect stoich tune in the cruise range and the plugs are always frosted white, they indicate normal not lean, lean would be a blistered ceramic insulator. AFR terms are routinely misused; lean= less fuel than stoich, but to most folks here, lean is anything less than a rich tune. Also factory tunes aren't lean, they are near stoich. Pinging is the result of too much timing advance, too much compression, or too much residual heat in the plug or combustion chamber, octane too low in the fuel being used; you have to modify one of those conditions to eliminate the ping. UltraDune, I heard no mention of tuning, only downloads. Canned maps are generic and in your case not working, you can continue the trial and error method of swapping maps or you can go get your bike tuned properly, or you can get the auto tune module for the PCV and tune it your self. Either way a proper tune beats the hell out out of a canned map every time.
I agree with fabrik8r ,
In my case it was because I had bumped up the compression to 10.5-1 . I have to run premium fuel or the pinging goes wild . I carry octane booster with me incase I can't buy 91 min octane . Stops the pinging right away .
and had bad pinging at 4000 rpm and wot. I checked the map and saw that they had set timing at +8 at full throttle. I knocked it back to 4 and the pinging went away. This was a dyno'd map (or was supposed to be) all the other settings were similar to most of the canned maps provided by Dynojet and FM for the setup I had (except for the timing) Bike runs extremely well now and have added the AT as well. Only tweaking I done is for decel popping.
