I just looked it up in my service manual (2010 Touring), and you want to install that tapered pipe plug (or hex plug) with Loctite Pipe Sealant with teflon 565 (P/N 99818-97). Tighten to 18-22 ft-lbs (24.4 29.8 NM).
+1 What he wrote. It's no big deal Thats were you install the sending unit fo the oil temp sending unit. I would get the HD service manual and parts manual for your model and year bike. Best thing you can buy if you want to do some work on you bike.

Or teflon tape. I use both tape and pipe dope whenever I assemble pipe fittings. Either or is fine, doesn't have to be loc tite brand.

I was just quoting the Harley Davidson Service Manual because some guy said to use red loctite. He can take my advice (from the service manual), or ignore it...his bike, his call.
I accidentally removed this hex plug myself. I am on pain meds from a recent full knee replacement and I f'ed up. Nothing came out. When I looked it up in my shop manual it just shows it as Hex Plug on oil pan. The manual says do not remove but there are no torq instructions or guidelines if you do remove. I don't want to screw up my pan from my stupid mistake. I high temp loctighted it back in flush with the oil pan. Should I be worried?
Thanks for any advice. Felling really stupid and pariniod I messed something up with just a damn hex plug.
