So that's enough to buy a new 96" HD engine every 4 1/2 years.
If invested in HOG stock that's a new engine every 2 years.

You are still working for a living, right?
There's nothing wrong with your math but I do have a problem with some of your assumptions.

Save $2.30 per tank? Around here regular is $.20 less per gallon. If you pump 5 gallons that's $1 saved per tank.

Three tanks a week? I get approximately 200 miles per tank and only need about 1 tank a week.

So that's $52 a year... Big Deal!

I used the figures that were presented. BTW, Down here in South FL the difference between regular and premium is 30-40 cents a gallon.

On average I fill up 3 times a week riding locally. It must be a South Florida thing

"A stock harley engine does not have the compression or timing for the need to burn High oct fuel. "

It does, however, have an air cooled engine with a lean condition in its stock form.

'Course, those who live in a state that has 10 months of winter probably don't worry about heat being the third cause of detonation.

Since I posted my first statement I have read alot of BS here.

1- if your bike is pinging, it's not good. This is known as detonation, over time is catostrophic to you motor. the fix may well be higher octane.

2- if you are worried about the cost of reg. to high octane in a 4.5 gallon tank get real.

I would suggest that some of you that obviously don't have a clue about detonation, or pinging also known as spark knock. Use your litle fingers and google it, and do a touch of reading.

It has not been a good year for me so far. Been working every nice weekend so no seat time other then about 20 miles. I did log just under 10,000 miles on it last summer and hope to do it again this summer. Did alot of riding in 90+ degree temps. Alot of my riding takes me through Central and nothern Minnesota. Not much up there other then small little towns with 1 pump stations. Same here in ND. Many of the towns are lucky to have two regular pumps muchless a premium pump.

One of the best ways to deal with the heat is not to labor your engine or lug it. Let it rev and it won't heat up so bad. So many people are afraid to let there motors run up to 4000 rpm before shifting. They want to bubble around at less then 3000 rpm all day long. Afraid to drop a gear for passing and for a longer pulling hill. Mine is a 5 speed and I can get by all day long without even touching 5th gear. The guys that have 6 speeds won't even think of dropping down to 5th muchless 4th.

Doing a full throttle pull from 2000 rpm to passing speed is more damaging to your engine then running low oct could ever do.

I ran aircooled engines for years on regular. Even my WR 500 which was the YZ 496 aircooled motor with a bigger tank and an extra gear. it was punched out bigger with full porting and head work, reeds, pipe etc. Yeap it ran just fine on regular old gas. That thing was a beast, It left me laying on the ground behind it more then once even though I was litterally sitting on the tank when I twisted the wick.

If you guys want to run gas that has a bunch of extra additives ,that don't really like to burn completely, then go for it Just remember the extra money you are throwing away at them extra additives.

I run premium because my owner's manual says to. I'm a pilot not an automotive engineer so I won't second guess the guys that designed the engine and wrote the book.

See, I will second quess them because I know why they say that or do that. It is just another way of stretching out their cushion to try and keep warrenty claims to a minimum. Just like the tuning of thier fuel systems along with thier choice of cams etc.

I am glad my scooter happily runs great on regular 87 oct fuel.

I always grin when I hear or read the claims that higher oct (premium) is better.

True. What you don't know (or see) can't hurt you.

Ignorance is bliss.
