I'm about 5hrs. Away from home and my 09 street glide just started acting like it may be miss firing, throttle response is rather sluggish. I was running V&H Pro pipe and changed over to rinehart true duels. I called rinehart and got the codes for the fuel pack. Well the trip started out great until I got into town, then my bike starts to chop and spudder at low rpms. So I pull over and find that the bolt had come off by the flange on the rear cylinder, causing an exhaust leak. So I have the local deal put the bolt on and tighten down all the other bolts. I had codes come that were saying no compression, o2 sensor was bad and something about a coil issue. Guys could the bolt coming off of the flange have caused all of these issues? Guy at V&H told me to ride 15 miles to reset the bike, could this be right?
An air leak in the exhaust before the O2 Sensor will definitely make the computer think that the mixture is too lean. The computer will richen up the air fuel ratio as a result. Because the mixture really isn't lean, the result will be a very rich mixture that will probably foul the spark plug after a while. Eventually the air leak will set a Code for a "Lean O2 Sensor." Also codes for a cylinder misfire and other codes may set depending on the extent of the air leak, and how much the computer reacts to the false reading of oxygen in the exhaust form the air leak.
First of all the exhaust leak will definitely NOT cause any permanent engine damage. So set your mind at ease in this. Second I agree with V&H in as much as after you fix the air leak you should clear all the Diagnostic Trouble Codes, maybe clean and/or replace the spark plug (rich fouled) and then see if you even have a problem anymore.
