If you want to control the iPod/iPhone through your handlebar controls, your options are either the expensive H-D adapter, or aftermarket deck.

Aftermarket decks will only allow volume control and track skip from the handlebar controls. Search functions and playlist scrolls will have to be done from the head unit. But an aftermarket head unit that controls an ipod is far less expensive than the harley adaptor.

if this helps:
I test rode the CVO specifically to test the interface with my ipod touch.
The ipod was mounted in the right saddlebag.
I found the controls "fiddly" and it required alot of up/down/back and forth to find a track.
Reading the display on the radio took my eyes off the road, alot.

My typical use touring is to start a playlist or listen to podscasts most of which are an hour or longer.

I now use a clear front "holster" clipped to the windshield bag- power from the lighter, audio to the aux in.
I use a griffin cable which has a play/pause button built into it- so I can pause when pulling into a toll.
With the holster I can see the screen if I have maps or directions on it, and don't have to drop my eyes from the road when riding.

cable $20, holster I already had from an old phone.

and I can just pull it off and take with me at gas stops
