Question decel popping after adding slip ons?

I have an '02 Ultra that I just added Samson Rolled Thunder slip ons to. The motor AC and ECM is all stock. When I put the Samsons on I started to notice decel popping. It isn't horrible and I can actually make it worse if i roll off the throttle quickly. This is my first fuel injected bike so I'm not sure where to go from here. I have a feeling an AC and PCIII are in my future. Unfortunately, the cash flow is really just a trickle right now.
Any ideas? Will the popping hurt the motor? As always, thanks for the input guys and gals!

Evan

Predictably, the popping is telling you about a lean condition. Cruise the classifieds here and ebay for the things you already know you need.

Usually, popping is a sign of a lean condition. It may or may not be harming your motor, but as you observe you are getting a warning. There are tons of info on here on how to read a plug and there are some pictures of what they should look like in some of the service manuals. However, IMHO (for what it is worth), I would look sooner rather than later into getting the bike tuned. Why even take a chance at burning up the motor just to have a little louder exhaust?

It is also possible that you have a slight leak at the clamp that holds your slip ons on...make sure the clamps go all the way to the edge of the muffler where it joins the head pipe and tighten them securely .

I did actually think that I had a leak at first because the right side pipe was honestly a B!TCH to "slip" on! I could not detect a leak with soapy water or just by feel. I was really hoping that was it because tuners cost far more than four bucks worth of jets! If I went the cheapest route possible, would it be hard to develop a map for a "modified" stock back plate with a K&N filter and a PCIII from fuel moto? FM has the least expensive prices I have found on controllers.

Your bike breathes easier with the less restrictive exhaust so it is probabaly running a little leaner now and a little additional popping is to be expected, normal. In a free flowing system it is not likely that you can tune out all decel pop. Your condition probably won't hurt your motor but thats purely speculation with out knowing your AFR.

Using a high temp RTV (I use the Ultra Gold) when you put on your slipons helps with leaks and makes for easier removal.

+1 on the possibility of a leak. Use new clamps, they're cheap. Also use the Ultra Gold.

Before you run out and spend $ you may not have do as suggested. Get "new" clamps for the pipes, put them close to the edge of the slip-on and tighten em up. Not positive but I think the torque is like 46 ft. lbs. Use a torque wrench because your isn't calibrated enough.

Found this surfing when I had the same issue;

Some decel popping is unavoidable with certain exhausts, but there are things you can do to reduce or even eliminate it in most cases. The first thing we strongly recommend is replacing the exhaust gaskets. Most people tell us “mine are fine, I don’t feel a leak”, but after changing them they find that the popping is reduced. Also, check all exhaust joints for leaks. Tighten all clamps and replace any gaskets that can be replaced.

The decel pop is caused by unburned fuel.

It is just that when the air fuel ratio is lean enough then it ignites. you will never have a complete burn by this I mean no fuel vapor in the exhaust. so when the mixture climbs to where you have enough air (oxygen) vs fuel and a way to ignite it (exhaust heat) it will ignite. adding a little fuel will decrease the AFR ratio to more parts fuel than air thus it becomes harder to ignite..look at it this way when you have a exhaust leak what happens. it starts to pop on decel. why is this... because you introduce air to the exhaust thus leaning out the mixture.
Decel popping can be created by a number of factors which are causing a combustion event in the exhaust system including but not limited primarily to a rich or lean condition, an exhaust leak, or reversion in the exhaust system from a free flowing design, short design, or large baffle design.

Hope this gives you more insight. Nice thing about this forum is the more you read questions, the more answers you find and the more research you do. But....In the end run it will be up to you to find the correct solution.

Good luck.

You know what to do. Get the heavy breather and the fueler, problem solved.
