Compensator?

What exactly does the compensator do? I sometime hear a grinding sound when I'm trying to start my bike. This usually happens when it kind of "Kick back". Is this the compensator or the starter?

I had the same thing on my 2009. Also made a 'knocking' noise when
I took off in first gear (lower RPMs).When I took my bike in for a new
brake light switch...they replaced the Compensator.

compensator

It is to buffer torque. Change it as soon as possible. Changed mine 08 ultra, what a difference it made. Use the se compensator.

It was explained some place on here that it is basically a shock absorber.

I replaced mine (08 RG), what a difference! Starts like it should, instead of sounding like it was self-destructing. Much quieter when idling, no rattle from the primary. Good investment (SE Compensator). Ride safe.
