The oil pump turns off the motor. The lower the RPMs the slower the pump turns, so the lower the pressure. At around 2500 RPMs, the pump should put out no more than 35 PSI because of the check valve. 5 PSI at idle is normal. You can buy high flow oil pumps, but this won't change the PSI.
Funny that this topic shows up. I just had that "wtf" feeling last week. I just got my 06 couple of week ago from a private owner. He had recently had warranty work done. Pump went bad, so they updated to screamin eagle oil system, hydrolic cam tensioners and cams. Anyway, I was at a light and noticed my pressure was about 8 psi. Knowing from my wide glide about not setting the idle to low or you starve the motor of oil. I figured the oil pressure is lower at idle, plus it went up when I increased rpm's. While riding with a couple of friends the otherday, there bikes (09 RG, and a 10 SG) were the same way. Would'nt hurt to have dealer check it out. They will probably tell you it's normal.
I think it is more perception than anything else. We see low oil pressure at idle and think there should be more but it is designed that way.
However, I have to believe if nothing else, a Baisley or Fueling upgrade might make it run a little cooler. Too much pressure and the bypass valve in the filter will kick in and the oil won't be filtered.

I had the same experience, but was assured it was ok, but when I did the cam upgrade I replaced the stock oil pressure spring and seat with the baisley. At idle now I see 12psi when hot compared to nothing and about 36psi when running. It just make me feel better being able to see oil pressure when at idle on the gauge. If I wasnt doing cam upgrade would probably never have done it.
thanks everyone and yes it drops down to about 5 or 8 so it sounds like its all good..i have been running mobil one syn. 20w50 the owners book says to run a 50 weight at temps above 60 and a 60 weight at temps above 80 so maybe will change to a 50 or 60 weight
