I had a Power Commander III and used a canned Power Commander map. Mine was a stock 96" with stage 1 (true duals, slip on mufflers, and hi flow air filter. I did go to Screaming Eagle plug wires but because of engine noise in my stereo.

While it's good to know your plug gaps are right and your plug wires are good, I wouldn't look for any miracles there. Mine was starting to experience starter kickback and when taking off when hot, got a little clatter from in the primary. That's why I think my compensator was suspect.

I just lived with it.

08s are geared to high. You can help several different ways; going to 103 is one way. I did this: swapped to SE255 cams, 68T rear sprocket, switched from dresser duals back to the stock header with 4" Jackpots. For the tuner I went with the Revolution Performance set up (wide band o2 sensors instead of narrow band). I do a lot of two up riding. These changes really helped. I figure the cams helped the most. It still doesn't take off like my 97 Evo Heritage Classic did, but it is a big improvement from stock. (changing the rear sprocket is the easiest. there is a thread on here with the part numbers........don't have time to look now.)

Humm...well this sux. It would be nice to have the SERT software, but it is apparently not available and I am not allowed to ask for it from members on this forum (got a warning message from a moderator for asking.) Does anyone know where I could BUY a copy of the software I need?

Try this link http://www.sendspace.com/file/q7d973 I downloaded ver 4.7.7 last month. It's free.

Having used the SERT I have since changed to the Power Commander III. My bike runs better with it and seems to be the choice among the majority of tuners IMHO. Before you go spending $$$ having a tune done by the dealer, ask around for tuner recommendations in your neck of the woods and then ask him if he tunes with the SERT. If he doesn't ask him what he likes best. You really can't effectively use the SERT without a dyno to make educated changes to your ECM.

M361, if you have trouble with the link send me an email and I will send you the zip file I got.

By the part number that you gave, it looks like you have the older tuner. Some people really liked this tuner more than the current crop of Harley tuners. This would be the time for someone with more experience with the older tuners to chime in. If memory serves me correctly, the tuner that you have is the one that was made by the folks over at TTS. They might be able to do a conversion for you for about $100 and that should include software. Or you could get the newer tuner for about $370, but then you would have to throw down $30 for the CD, and another $30ish for th cables.

A couple other easy things to check before you get concerned about your Map would be:
-Air Cleaner Condition
-Oil Level (Too High and you will lose power)
-Change out the plug wires
-Check your primary for the condition of the Comp.

Other than those simple checks, I don't know what your level of comfort/skill is to suggest more. A lot of times if you talk to a good Indy, they will take a look and give you some suggestions.

This mod is going to be the least expensive way to solve your problem. I had my sights set on it but sold the bike before it happened.

Thanks for these suggestions. I have a repair manual so I will try to figure out to check the compensator.

Another thing, like you mentioned, is that I have one of the HD digital temp/level dipstick and it has always indicated the level is high. However, when I installed the digital dipstick, the old stock dipstick seemed to show the correct level of oil. I just assumed the digital level was not accurate. Maybe I need to remove a little oil to see if that helps also.
