I have short legs and keep catchin my damn leg on the passanger floor boards of my 02 Ultra. I want to cut the center post off and move the dam thing back and re weld it so the bracket is more like an L then a T.
Is this bracket cast and can it be rewelded. I do alot of TIG welding here so if its weldable Im at it!! This is just the stock T bracket.

Ya but even folded my legs catch on them. Ive dropped the bike down an inch, lowered the seat. Cut the brackets for the forward boards off and moved the boards as far forwad as possible to give me more room between the front and rear boards..probably gained a good 1 1/4 + inches there. Now I just have to deal with the passanger boards. If I can move the actual board back than Im good. Im 5,6 but my inseam is short .
Are you a welder, or do you weld? I find it interesting that you claim to frequently perform the most dificult of welding processes, yet you don't know how to identify your base metal or a suitable process/proceedure to perform the the task. I'm going out a limb and say they are cast, HD ain't going to sacrifice their profit margin, to put machined billet mounts on every touring bike they sell, $129.00 for the chrome version is another good indicator that they are cast. Either way, doesn't matter, there are suitable processes and proceedures to weld cast that yeild acceptable integrity.
I tig weld mostly Stainless. for 30 yeas or more. Some mild steel as well. Never welded cast,
My only concern here is I dont want to go through the bull of removing the paint and cutting them if I cant tig weld them. The welding I can do. I was tought in a shop years ago for the purpose of stainless restaurant equipment only.I can weld 2 sheets a 18 gauge stainless together, grind and refinish them so you would never know they were welded. I was never tought theory so Ya, I can weld no problem ,but unfortunetly I do need to check first on other metals.
Ya I can just buy rear pegs for a Street Glide but our postal service is on lock out so I am trying to solve my problem the easiest way now. I just want to know if I can simply cut them and re weld them with my tig. Thats it.
Sounds like you can make anything you want- give it a go.
I did go for the street glide pegs and that solved my problem ( and i am tall, kept banging my calves paddling around the driveway) - cost me about $75 from a forum member ( although it turned out he lived down the road).
you may want to get you passenger up there and see where the feets go, if you move them back, their legs may hit on the crash bars- causing complaints
Like you, I know what I know, don't know what I don't know. I'm not a skilled TIG guy, so I don't know about using that process for cast. I have used OXY/FUEL brazing which is effective when performed correctly but is very dificult to get it right with cast, and I have used a simple arc machine with special purpose cast rods. No matter what you do, cast is challenging regardless of skill or process. If this were my project I would lean more towards macining a new set, with the offset you are trying to attain. Get an extra set off EBAY, give it a try, and smack it with a hammer when you're done, if they hold, go for it. Its a highly technical method but sometimes that's what it comes down to.
I have ordered a set of Street glide pegs brackets, Still have to order the pegs ,but our postal is locked out so who knows when the system will be back. Than again how long after before I get the damn things. My back legs got cought the other day and dragged my foot. Talk about being pissed off! I can always drill, tap and throw a bolt in it temporarily if it doesnt work.

I like the boards where they are, I keep alot of my weight on my feet ( and off my ***) I can do that with stock positioning, any further forward and i have problems with my toe hanging up in the lowers when i want to hit the rear brake.
any farther out and I'd scrape them more than I do.
so you figure that bikes are set at 'average' and they are happy to sell parts for those who are outside of those bounds.
