So I have begun gathering the parts to do a Stage 1 upgrade to my '11 Ultra Classic. I ordered the SE Stage 1 Air Intake from Zanotti's this morning and took a look at the installation instructions from the HD website.
"Remove the tank..." - really? I thought this was going to be an easy install, but the bolts to the Induction Module Bracket look like a bear to get to. Any shortcuts that you have found that could help me avoid making this an all day event? Seems like a pain to remove the tank to get to those bolts...
You don't have to fully remove the tank but almost.
Remove seat, loosen only the 2 tank to frame bolts, remove front frame bolts, lift and wedge a small piece of 2 x4 under tank to allow you the space required to get your Allen wrenches on the bracket bolts......Its pretty easy, don't sweat it the results are well worth the effort.
+1 on that! I used a 1x2 and with a little patience it did not take long. The whole upgrade including installing Power Commander V took me less than an hour and a half to complete.
The tank is cake to take off, I have had mine off atleast 5-6 times. there is a quick disconnect fuel line and a few bolts. I tried just lifting it up but it comes way to close to the fort lock switch so I just removed it, plus you still have to fight to get the bolts off for the module when you just lift it.....
Don't fret over it, you can have your tank off in under 15 minutes having never done it before. I am guessing after the first time you will be able to have it off in 5-10.
Remove the bolt holding the seat, remove the seat, remove the front tank bolts, disconnect the quick connect, remove the rear bolt, and just lift the tank, turn it 180 degrees and set it back down. No need for 1x's, 2x's or anything else.
If you are worried or want help, PM me and I'll be glad to help, you can come by my house or yours.
I did not remove my tank on my 2011 RGU. I lifted the back and used a socket lallen wrench and never had any trouble pulling the two socket screws out. I have the 103 with acr's so I cut the ears off the bracket and put it back on because the bracket holds the acr wires.
Tank on and off is only 4 bolts and a quick disconnect fuel line, it is easy and simple BUT I have never even loosened them to get the induction bracket on or off. A standard allen sometimes bent slightly will do the trick..Good Luck PJ!
