Service Question
I had my 1600 Km service done at dealer, I now have 9000 Km on bike after a long trip. I take bike in for oil change and they tell me they have to due another service at close to $480.00 and $330.00 is for labour.
I said just change the oil in engine, they tell me that the service is required as they check everything and adjust everything (scare tactic). I told them if you adjust everything then why did I have to adjust my clutch lever 1000 Km after you adjusted it.
I guess the point I am making is if I knew that Harleys needed all this service I would have stayed with my previous bike. You have to be crazy spending $480.00 every 8000 KM because that is what they told me every 8000 Km it needs a service. Oil should be changed at every 8000 KM
I am getting the manual and doing it myself, like I did for every other bike I owned. What do you guys do?

I think the most important thing is to change the fluids, check the clutch adjustment and the drive belt.
I have been doing all the services on my bikes except for the 1K .A few times I have skipped the critical fastner checks without any issues.

I do my own service. BTW my Chevys, Fords, Hondas and Kawasaki have service schedules similar to my Harley. I service all of them at every 2500 mi (4000km).
I'm doing everything myself because its written in my manual that when you have the skills and buy HD parts and oil, you are covered by the warranty.
So I bought the service manual, the electrical diagnostics manual plus the parts manual. Add an oil filter wrench, a digital torque meter mainly for the rear wheel, a few specific tools, a lift, a battery tender and you're ready to go. The announced cost of labor during the first maintenance covers most of my investment. Most of all, you know your bike and which tools to carry
