Good luck convincing those who think it is the 2nd coming of christ.
They spend $100 on $10 worth of parts and figure their bikes can be driven across water.................
Sorry for the staunch opinion, but I am very much a realist................

I thought fuel injection was suppose to solve these lean and rich conditions that we had with carbs. Fuel injection was never added to cars or bikes for power purposes because in fact all else being equal a carb produces more than fuel injection. FI is suppose to make tuning easier (mapping instead of rejetting) and adjust automatically for altitude and temp changes. Sorry but Harleys system is not working very well. It just dosnt.

I was going to go with a Power Vision or something, but thought I would give HD a chance to fix it. Glad I did. Saved me a lot of money and my bike runs great

Got great news for you guys. I was on the phone with a Tech at Biggs Harley. And from the information I got. You will get pinging regardless of your set up. I have a pinging problem but it only happens when I go Wide Open Throttle. A smooth roll on throttle will eliminate the pinging.

So when you are cruising along and all of a sudden you just whack the throttle open you get pinging because you are putting in too much air for the engine to catch up. Get it?

Or if you are in the lower rev/rpm range and you want to crack the throttle wide open you get pinging because it is not in its sweet spot because of too much air going in at a low rev range.

But if you get pinging by just cruising around, then you have another issue.

That's not great news, that's a guy who can't tune.

Ideas? I use Mobil1 Vtwin oil. Does the 103 engine need dino oil instead or is it maybe something else?
========================================

Heat is a significant factor in detonation and fact is 103's even with hd's stock oil cooler that " without elec cooling fans is useless when needed most " sitting still in traffic at lights or when when at slow road speed get plenty hot .

So if tuning with your new tuner dosent seem to help my 09 96" used to detonate/ping esp in summer heat riding 2 up on hd's rec 91 0ctane fuel and even when using premium 93 octane at times too.

Read what i did (pasted below ) that lower oil tremp 50+ deg on hot days (also lower engine heat at same time too) that fixed / stopped the motor from detonating along while also improving riding comfort & general engine perf at the same time too.

Scott.

=================================================

Keep in mind a stock hd oil cooler doesnt have elec cooling fans rendering it just about useless when needed most stopped at lights and in slow moving traffic which is due to fact there is little to no cool air being moved thru oil cooler sitting still with no elec cooling fans which over heats the oil thinning it out even if your running top of the line dino or full syn oil,same thins happens significantly thinning the oil out reducing oil pressure a lot in the process.

NOTE,EXCESS CARBON BUILDUP IN COMB CHAMBERS RUN CAN PROMOTE POING/DETONATION ISSUES TOO SO RUN A COUPLE FULL TANKS OF FUEL TREATED WITH A HEALTHY DOSE OF CHEVRON'S TECHRON INJECTOR/CARBON CLEANER (CONCENTRATED VERSION AS STATED ON LABEL) OF 1.5OZ PER GAL .

SO IT CANT HURT TO 1ST CLEAN THINGS UP INSIDE THE MOTOR USING A HEALTHY DOSE OF 9oz TECHRON (CONCENTRATED VERSION) PER 6 GALS FUEL TO REMOVE EXCESS CARBON ETC FROM COMBUSTION CHAMBERS,BACKSIDE OF INTAKE VALVES AND INJECTORS TOO BECAUSE EXCESS CARBON BUILDUP IN COMB CHAMBERS AND ON PISTONS CAN IN SOME CASES AFFECT & OR PROMOTE DETONATION .

OK,MOVING ON ,my stock 09 96" tc motor in 85-90+ deg summer heat used to detonate and have low oil pressure which i fixed by sig reducing oil & engine temp .

Before reducing oil temp 50+ deg with stock gauge in faring the motor used have 8-10lbs psi oil pressure @ idle (approx 950-1krpm) & 32-35psi oil pressure @ cruise (approx 2500-2600rpm.) in summer heat with spectro 20w-50 oil for HD's.

Oil temp (stock hd gauge in faring) in same 85-90+ deg summer heat before cooling the oil & motor would get up to approx 250-260deg f too.

Post installing an oil cooler with elec cooling fans and wards cooling fans (mostly targets cooling heads and upper cyls) the oil temp was reduced 50deg f in same 85-90+ deg summer heat & cond.

The 50deg reduction in oil temp on hot days resulted in a huge improvement / increase in oil pressure going from 8-10lbs psi @ idle (approx 950-1krpm) & 32-35psi @ cruise before installing the 2 cooling system mods to now having 18-20psi @ idle & 45-48psi @ cruise in 85-90+ deg summer heat with stock oil pump in the 96" motor on my 09 flhtcu.

Guys just dont realize how much heat affects the oil & motor in multiple areas or operation and the time & money i spent installing those 2 cooling system mods gave my bike multiple improvements i could feel right off the bat in riding comfort & engine perf .

IMPROVEMENTS POST INSTALLING THE 2 COOLING SYSTEM MODS THAT REDUCED OIL TEMP 50+ DEG WERE AS FOLLOWS:

* SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN OIL PRESSURE ESP IN 85-90+ DEG SUMMER HEAT

* MOTOR STOPPED DETONATING

* VALVE TRAIN IS QUIETER

* MOTOR RETAINS CRISPER THROTTLE RESPONSE RETAINING MOST IF ITS PWR/TRQ BECAUSE INTAKE & MOTOR ARENT AS HEAT SOAKED/HOT ANYMORE.

* LESS HEAT FROM MOTOR SO LITTLE LESS HEAT ON RIDER = MORE RIDING COMFORT ON HOT DAYS

* STARTER AND BATTERY ARE A BIT LESS HEAT SOAKED SO THE MOTOR STARTS FASTER / SPINS OVER NOTICEABLY EASIER POST FUELING UP ON HOT DAYS

* NOT PROVEN BUT COMMON SENSE TELLS ME REDUCING OIL TEMP 50+ DEG ON HOT DAYS WOULD HAVE TO HELP EXTEND SRVC LIFE OF THINGS LIKE SEALS (ESP VALVE SEALS) ,GASKETS AND ENGINE IN GENERAL TOO.

Oh crap!

Just realized someone brought a 3yr old thread up again that i feel for " hook line & sinker " before realizing it!

OH WELL,maybe someone else having detonation issues will get something useful out of it anyway.
