Moatly when 2-up and any type of incline. RPM range can be anywhere and the bike starts to detonate and ping. I put a Fuel-Moto PCV on it and it didn't seem to help. What is going on with this thing. i don't want to damage the engine so I just haven't been riding much. The 100+ temps help me stay off of it too but mostly the pinging.
Ideas? I use Mobil1 Vtwin oil. Does the 103 engine need dino oil instead or is it maybe something else?
Your oil has nothing to do with it, it's all about your tune. Did it ping like this when it was stock? Just curious. My '07 pinged like crazy when it was stock but my '11 hasn't pinged on me yet, I'm very happy with it as is.
you will need to figure out what rpm and how much load is on motor when it pings.
had the same problem with mine with mine. I took 3 degrees out at 2000-2500 rpm and a couple off at 5700 rpm. shitty gas dont help . I had some midrange gas in before I changed timing and it really pinged, put in all high test and it got better but still pinged at bit. I had a different program in earlier and it never pinged but all timing was about 6-8 degrees less
Try a different brand fuel with the required octane.
Different brands have different additives , most cars can adapt , our bikes have limited capabilities , so your bike may have a favorite fuel need.
I've had good luck with Sunoco , and Kwik Fill , so I generally stay with them.
Where you ride is much hotter than here , so it may be more critical for your region.
Our air cooled motors are sometimes a bit picky compared to automobiles.
I did find that I have to remove my fork air baffle when the weather gets into the 90's where I ride as I get a slight ping with it mounted.
Mick
My bike has the dreded ping too, but it has gotten worse since I have added mods. I have autotune as well, which should help. I guess adjusting the timing will be my next route. And I have tried various brands of gasoline and octane booster.
Did you do any engine mods besides the pipes, a/c and FuelMoto? Based on just the info you provided, here are things that will help
Only use 91/93/95 octane octane fuel, dont let engine rpms drop below 2000 when shifting, adjust you AFR (could be too rich or too lean), retard ignition timing a bit. lower operating temperature by adding an oil cooler. I'm not familiar with the FuelMoto device, have used power commanders and super tuners on different bikes. You can adjust your air fuel mixture across the rpm band and retard ignition easily with those.
Mine used to drive me crazy until I put 103" with SE 255 and StageII and V&H Fuel pack and V&H true dual also added oil cooler but that is chit load of money to make it run right.
