Default Installing speedo/tach combo on 05 RoadKingClassic - problems!

Hey everyone....I'm the proud owner of a 2005 Road King Classic in the two tone blue. Have just a little over 400 miles on her now!

Anyway, I just got one of the new speedometer/tachometer combos to put on the bike. Yeah, I know....I've heard all the cons to them but I just didn't like the way a tach would look on the front of the bike with the windshield off.

Here's the problem....I bought the kit PN 74461-03A (for 1999 and later FLHR/I with domestic miles). I've got the bike apart and am trying to follow the directions that came with the kit.

First problem: The directions say to look for a pink wire under the headlamp nacelle. I have completely taken that thing apart and still find no "pink" wire. I found a reddish wire with a connector covered with a red cover and a black one right next to it attached to the headlamp plug, but no other pink wire just sitting there. I have no clue what to hook up the pink wire to up there.

Second problem: I opened up the console and took out the stock speedo. I then looked at the back of the new speedo/tach and noticed that the plug on the new one is LARGE. The stock speedo has a very small plug (36B). What gives? Is the 2005 RKC FLHRCI different from previous years?

Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to get this thing working?

thanks!!!
Jim

I'm not expert here, but that's not the right kit.

74461-03A

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

MPH Calibrated

Fits '95-'03 FLHR and '00-'03 SoftailÂŽ models (except FXSTD). '95-'98 FLHR models require Speedometer / Tachometer Retrofit Kit P/N 74468-03.
Notice it doesn't include your RK

I think this is the one you want.

74549-04

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

MPH Calibrated

Fits '04-later Dyna Wide GlideÂŽ, SoftailÂŽ and Road KingÂŽ models.

MSRP US $449.95
Or this one. I'm not sure what the difference is.

74555-04

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

KPH Calibrated

Fits '04-later Dyna Wide Glide, Softail and Road King models.

MSRP US $449.95

I had no problem installing mine. The only thing was the plug position on the new speedo/tach combo was upside down compared to the stock speedo unit. I just had to stretch the wire harness a bit to plug the plug in. I did not have to look for a pink wire in the headlite assembly. Just one plug.

What are the nay sayers saying about this combo? I like mine. No problems with it. I now have an accurate tach and the speedo is right on. The unit looks better than the stock speedo also.

The 04 and 05 are different from the previous years, they are serial bus as opposed to the older ones where you had a different wiring in that area. The pink wire is no more on most bikes. They use the #3 position on the plug for the tach input signal which needs a wire terminal that you get from the dealer P/N 74196-04 . I believe yours should just plug in with that system as long as you have the right part number for the assembly.

The difference in the 74549-04 and 74555-04 is MPH Calibrated and KPH Calibrated

basically US and Other

I think 1200c is right. On my '05 RK Classic I just unplugged the old one, plugged in the new one (all at the console) and done! I don't remember routing anything to the nacelle. Are you sure you have the right part number? I love mine. It's the "classic" looking tach/speedometer combo. It's worked like a charm ever since it was installed. Looks really cool too.[8D]

Weird thing, I have an 05 road king, and speedo shorted out after washing it. I bought this same tach, but the model # ends with B instead of A. Same thing except for there is no KPH on MPH. I followed the install and data link to a T, and when I would ignition I'd get a NO CAL in the LCD, and then that would go away, and it was replaced with NO SPD. It would not transfer the odometer to the new odometer. I'm thinking that if your speedo stopped working, replacing it with this type of Speedo will not work due to the inability to transfer odometer reading of a broken speedo to the new speedometer. I can't find anyone with an answer to this.

I thought this might be an issue, as the old speedo was as if it wasn't there because IT WAS BROKEN (insert Sam Kinison Tirade). Our shop service guy in Folsom checked with the mechanic, and "it's okay, just follow the directions." Engine switch on, Data Link plugged in, no go! I had the old speedo out, and was tapping it and banging it slightly, and I saw LED partially show numbers, they would immediately dim if I stopped squeezing the old gauge. Thinking the ecm possibly sensed the old speedo after doing the Fonz bang and tap on the old speedo, which seemed to allow some juice into it, so I did the transfer procedure again, and something did change this time as it just went to NO CAL, without going to NO SPD.

I'm assuming NO SPD means it isn't sensing a speedo. Well It stopped that, and the NO CAL shows. There is a red light blinking, but then after a bit the red light goes solid and stays on. But still it did not do the conversion. The trouble shooting guide for this particular NO CAL says, normal function, but ads as long as "percentage and ok" show, which they don't. I went ahead and plugged the new speedo into the consul to see if something happened, and the new speedo lit up beautifully, but with NO CAL or something I forget. But no odometer transfer. I'm wondering if I should ride it and go through that 31 mph countdown the document spells out.

I'm going back down to get a speed sensor. Apparently, it could be that issue if the signal lights don't cancel, for one sign. With the bike just leaning on the stand, it doesn't cancel. Somebody said I had to at least lean it or move the steering for it to cancel, which I haven't done. So, I'll check for cancellation leaning and turning the bike. With all the forums out there only about 4 of these issues are on the net, and none of those who had the problem explained how they solved it. These speedo combo's don't work if your replacing a broken one. They should explain this, as there is no refund for them. They seem to only work if you are upgrading. I need to get the odometer reading back, as I'm selling. Any ideas?
