Yep, that's exactly what I did. I think it was a combination of being tired, the angle of the hole in the cover, etc. The next time, it'll probably start the first time I try.

cut the small end of allen wrench for the bottom screws and spin cover to install cable. Do not over tighten as said before.

I used a +4 cable for my +2 wide sweepers on a 09 RG. The cable is actually a bit too long. I tried to tie strap it down to the frame to pull the extra slack out but its still too long.

I too only had to remove the exhaust heat shield by using a cut down allen wrench.

I probably could get by with a +2, just guessing at this point, but I suppose I can hide the extra from the +4 in the fairing.
