Default Andrews 48H

New cams, Rinehart 2-1, Power Commander V with Autotune installed on a friends bike today. Its a 2007 Ultra Classic and Im very pleased with the results. As most of us know, the 07 and 08 bikes are over geared. If I had one of those year model baggers, I would add the 30 tooth front sprocket and call it good. This setup seems to work very well IMO and generates considerably less heat than the SE-255 cams produce. I run the SE-255's SEPST and a T-header on my 2009 RKC and I'll be honest, I'm considering putting the Andrews 48's in my bike. You feel them coming on around 2500 and by 3100 rpm you are right in the sweet spot and they start to fade a little by 4200 rpm. Perfect for my riding style and again, less heat than the 4 degree earlier intake close of the SE-255's. Very nice 96" bagger cams!

I don't see heat issues with my TC96-255 combo, and mine runs about as cool as a TC can, not much if any different than I experienced with the stock cams. In these 95-100° summer days my oil temp stays at around 200° while moving >45mph and goes beyond 220° only in the worst summer gridlock traffic, never exceeding 230°. ET (Engine Temp measured on the front head) stays around 225-235° when moving >45mph and gets into the upper-200's only in slow city traffic, almost never hitting 300°. Again, I'm talking about running temps in the peak of summer (like now). What's more, I'm running 14.5:1 AFR in the cruise range, which is stock territory, leaner than most prefer to use, and doesn't help with cooling. I do have an HD oil cooler, which does help considerably.

All that said, I do think the Andrew 48 is a winner for baggers. If I bought a new 103 I would probably opt for it over the 255, but not without giving it considerable thought, as I like the 255's very much in the TC96. For the smaller motor I would prefer the 255's because I think they'll bump the low-end better, which is a priority for me over top-end performance, and with 9.2:1 compression we need all the help we can get. OTOH the 103 has higher compression (9.7:1), and retaining good low-end grunt wouldn't be as much of a worry as with the 96.

What kind of temperatures are you seeing with your setup?

Thanks for your response, iclick. I dont have any means of measuring my temps on my RKC but it does get hot because the EITMS engauges frequently in this summer heat. For instance, when Im out riding with friends down old two lane highways say around 60 mph average cruise speed, when we come to a stop somewhere and talk for more than about 2 minutes, the EITMS on my bike will kick in while my friends 2009 SG with SE A/C and V&H slip-ons and another friends 2010 RKC that has a stage 1 download, SE A/C and FM headpipe and Rush slip-ons will not kick in the EITMS. None of us have an oil cooler. I was trying to put a HD oil cooler on my bike but it would not work with my Thunderheader because the O2 sensor is right in the way so I intend to eventually try a Jagg cooler. I have the SEPST and a professional custom tune and I am not familir with how to use the smart tune feature to see if I could remedy the heat some. As for your second paragraph, I agree with you 100%.

if your bike is running so hot you may want to consider a good quality synthetic oil like Amsoil. just sayin.

Well, the 255's do increase CCP, which may increase engine temps under some conditions--but mine hits 290° only rarely. That's where EITMS kicked in when I had that ECM download installed, but I no longer have it. FWIW, the only way EITMS will work on an '07 is if a specific ECM download is installed, while '09 and later have it installed standard.

It's hard to tell where the tuner set AFRs in the cruise range without looking at the ECM tables with the software. Regardless, an oil cooler would be a good idea, and I have always thought that any TC engine should have one installed.
