Riding down the road minding my own business when the engine light and battery light come on. Think to myself Ohhhh S*&^ ! I drive it to the Dealership (Stealership....Whatever). I have them look at it and the Stator is toast. They change the Stator and then find out the Regulator was taken out as well (according to them it is common for the Stator to take out the Regulator when it goes bad). I am thinking.....Really?......nothing to protect the Regulator? (seems like a design flaw but what do I know!) $700.00 dollars later I am riding but it did sting! I do my own maintenance and a fair amount of wrenching but electrical stuff I am not confident in so I let them do it and it cost me an extra $200. What will I do if it happens again?......haha.....I guess I will figure that out!......dang I do love to ride!
I feel your pain, the same thing happend to me while on a trip visiting Zoin NP. Had to stay over night, in a Holliday Inn Express and yes i did feel better the next day.
Man I would think an open or short condition in that regulator would stay there and not fry that stator. I guess I might have to get my hands on a junk stator and see whats inside. Interesting.
It actually is not uncommon for one to take out the other. I've seen regulators, stators and batteries being replaced all in one swoop. Just for shagrins, tell me your VIN# and I'll run it and see if your 06 was one of the affected ones of the voltage regulator recall back then.
you would think there would be some fuses in the stator and regulator circut......maybe that should be our next mod. now just need to figure out if it's a 30 or 45 amp stator.
My ind tech tells me that he sees more stator problems on bike that run synthetic oil, and nearly never on std oil. He's been working in bikes of all kinds for over 30 years???? I just gotta believe him so when he does my services I use his recomendation.
It'd be interesting to know how many out there have this problem that use syn vs std oil.

Ummm the stator is in the primary so, most, or at least I don't run synthetic in the primary.
I would say 80% of the HD techs that I have talked to don't like synthetic oil, I can not figure out why. Most of them say HD 20/50 is tried, and true.
Does synthetic oil in the primary help or hinder stator longevity? An interesting question I also would like to have an answer for. Harley runs syn oil in all their CVO's and I have over 100K riding with syn oil with other bikes, never had a stator problem because of it. I think we need a poll to find out if it is just happening to the newer bikes.
