I got to cross two things off my list this past ten days. First, the wife (on her '09 Deluxe) and I took a bike riding vacation together riding to Bandera and Houston.
Second, we rode the Three Twisted Sisters (Ranch Roads 335, 336 and 337) in the Texas Hill Country. Then took secondary roads to Houston, with a stop at the Shiner Brewery.
Now we want to ride to Sturgis and Arizona. Sometimes I wished we lived more centrally in the state, crossing the King Ranch is just a boring ride and to just get out of the state is an 800+ mile trip for us.
1. Smoky Mountains (Tail of the Dragon, BRP, Cherohala Skyway)
2. Pacific Coast Highway (will check that off next month)
3. Going to the Sun Road (Glacier NP)
4. Black Hills (again, was there in 2009)
I missed a great opportunity last June to go to the Smoky Mountains. I had been sick and in the hospital and wasn't up to a 5,000 mile ride. I'll make it there someday.
My grandfather was a H-D experimental department employee and test rider. I have a log book from a 1948 test trip to Arizona and back from Milwaukee. I have daily records of the entire trip including lodging for each evening, 16 days and 5,002 miles round trip. I would like to replicate this trip at some time.
Ok, while I have my own bucket list of rides to make, I have to say that this is the best and most touching. I envy you for finding a treasure such as your grandfathers log book. When you get to do this ride you will not only replicate the trip but you will bond with you grandfather in a way that the rest of us only dream of... Please make this happen, you won't regret it....
