Have had both. It comes down to do you want and are you willing to pay to have the best mc audio available? If you can't afford j and m hog tunes won't disappoint.

I had Hogtunes and was happy with the upgrade, especially for the price, but there are better solutions out there IMO if cost isn't a major obstacle. I had HT fairing speakers, Tweeter Pod, and amp. The amp died a month or two ago after three years of good service and I ended up buying an Elf amp with >3x the power for a song ($135). You can find these new for ~$200. I used it with the Hogtunes speakers for a few weeks, then decided on upgrading the speakers too, going with 6˝" Biketronics-Hertz. At $340 for the amp and speakers this was a very nice upgrade indeed, but was not plug-and-play.

I decided against J&M because of the price vs. what I thought I would be getting. I can confidently hack a system together from sundry parts and sources, so the plug-and-play aspect wasn't that important to me. There are quite a few threads on the subject of stereo upgrades here, several appearing lately, so I would start reading-up on owner feedback from them. It is not an easy task, as sound quality is a subjective interpretation and not everyone can hear as well as the next guy. What sounds great to one will sound bad to another. It took me several weeks and I came upon the 125W/ch. RMS (@ 2Ω) Elf amp on Ebay, a refurb for $135, which was a great bargain. The Hertz speakers came later after even more painful deliberation, and I just got them installed a week or so ago.

First, don't expect thundering bass from a typical HD stereo upgrade, as it just isn't going to happen unless you get radical, like speakers in the saddlebags. You can have a nice sound, including decent bass response, that gets out to your ears even at highway speeds, but you'll need power and a speaker system that can handle it. I would look for at least 75W RMS per channel and a 6˝" or larger speaker.

Good luck and start your research.

I have Hawg Wired and like it. However I was at Eastside Harely the other day and they had one of their bikes set up with Focal speakers and Arc amp. Along with a JL sub in the saddlebag. Wow! Sounded great.

I have hogtunes speakers amp and tweeter kit in a 2010 street glide and it sounds good to me. I cruise at about 80 to 85 and hear my music clear as day. I have installed 3 kits on my buddies bikes and they love it too. What it comes down to is the clarity of the music u want. I think hogunes make a great product except for the hook up to the battery terminals. Could have used a better connector to the battery. They brake very easily. Be gentle when u tighten them to battery. Good luck in what u buy

I'm running a Hog Tunes 2-channel setup with 5x7 speakers on my RGC with 12" windshield and am pretty happy with it. I would think that an amped 4 or 6 channel set up would be really nice. But as has been suggested, everyone's taste is different. I wanted an audio system for my listening enjoyment, rather than the listening enjoyment of all the cages around me.

I have Hogtunes speakers with the amp and am quite happy with it. Just remember that at the end of the day, coupled with all the other sounds associated with riding, it's really just a bike radio.

As an electronics engineer I find J&M's practise of marketing their speaker based on 'Max Power' highly deceptive. Meaningful speaker measurements are always quoted in continuous power or RMS. Max power or peak power is a nebulous statement unless backed up by a sustainable time duration that the speaker can withstand. To say your speaker is capable of 170 watts max power is akin to claiming a standard 60 watt household lightbulb is actually a 540 watt 'max power' light bulb. Making the numbers look good on paper is a marketing trick that has no bearing in real world applications.
