Starter issues - need help!

Time to clean up the solinoid contact washer in the starter. If you hit it and it worked its due to wear on the solinoid and you dont even need to remove the starter. A little work with a file and your done.

I'm trying to figure out how to do this without removing the starter. The SM doesn't address this. Can you enlighten me?

That's why i always put one of those starter end cap push buttons on my bikes.Just incase i get stuck with a switch or starter issue i can push it and worry about it when i get home.

Do you have clear acsess to the 4 bolts at the rear of the solinoid that retain a thin metal cover? If so remove them and pull the solinoid shaft that has a large copper washer on it. I'm trying to relate as I have a 07 FXST so things are different.

I agree. I wish I could install a functional kicker but with FI its not possible.

No, unfortunately the exhaust support bracket blocks the access to the rear of the solenoid. I guess I'm screwed then and have to remove the whole assembly.

Back when I had a 2007 Electra Glide Classic, I was having the same problem, turned out the ground wire on the back of starter was loose, was new, came from factory that way dealer had to remove exhaust and starter to get to it, after tightened no problem next 20000 miles untill traded

Yep. Heard of guys adding an extra cable from the starter housing to the body to improve grounding of the starter especialy if you have a chrome inner primary.
