I just brought my bike in to the dealer for a failed rear brake. At the time it happened I had white smoke with a plastic burning smell coming from the rear brake light sensor/switch in the rear brake line. Quite a bit actually. I also didn't know about the problem until I completely loss the brake.
I did a little bit of internet research and found that this is not just an isolated incident. Evidently the brake light switch failed and caused a leak in the brake line which started burning. In my opinion this could have possibly caused a fire and or an accident. My dealer said they've had a few of these on the touring bikes.
I'd like to know how many have had a similar problem. I may call HD to suggest they may have what might be a safety/recall item, although I'm they probably are already aware of it.
I too had a rear break sensor rupture disk failure around 30,000 mi. on my 09, just my luck less than 2 months out of warrenty but they replaced the failed switch an bled brakes then back on the road.
Replaced mine about two months ago (about 47K miles).....when to stop at a red light...no rear brake. I have extended warranty...but dealer service writer said in so many words "Yep...another one" I asked about a 'recall' and service writer said "Most people replace them, themselves since bike is usually out of warranty...so Harley never hears about them.".
Replaced the switch myself. Still had rear brakes, but rear brake lights were not functioning. Found the rear brake pressure switch was leaking brake fluid. Can't say what the cause was for sure, but that switch is awfully close to exhaust.
