You are smelling the natural musk of a Harley-Davidson. You probably are smelling blow by vented into the air cleaner and a nice aroma coming from the tranny. Damn that is a great smell, isn't it?
It's a great Harley smell, I like diesel, Hey !......a 200 cu. in. diesel that would be cool ! Try not to pick your nose while doing a oil change.
Check the 2 fasteners where your pipes mount to, right under your tranny cover and make sure that they are tight..
You may have to remove one of the heat shields to do this unless you have the right tool.
Also if you smell gear lube, check the back side of your right muffler for "crusty" feeling debris. If you can feel something like that on your muffler, you more than likely have a leak, and it is more than likely coming from the the 2 fasteners where your pipes mount under your tranny and then leaking onto your muffler.
This is a good post, a slight leak there will drip on the exhaust and smell, this happened to me.
I smell it too. the only time i dont smell it is when I smell gas fumes. come to think of it, the only fluid I do not smell is brake fluid.....better check that..that might mean that it's low.
I'm glad the oil smell is a normal thing. One less thing to worry about. This is my first harley, and I'm learning a lot about their "character" or "soul" that other brands don't have.
Now when I the smell oil, I can say it smells like a Harley.
Mine intensified a little with the stage 1 Air Cleaner, not that I minded it just noticed it more especially on decel for stops. When the throttle plate is closed the blowby can't vent fully into the intake, after the bike comes to rest and sits a bit it goes mostly away and vanishes as I take off. A little tranny oil smell from the vent is also quite normal, pressure has to go somewhere as the oil heats up.
Good post Steelerdude.....I recently has Shockproof put in the tranny at 1K service and since then I can smell that distinct smell after I ride. No drips on garage floor so I'll go with the venting. No smell before I changed over to the Shockproof
