Don't get me wrong my 09 Ultra is light years ahead of my 07 RKC, just surprised at the diff in front end stability after a long ride on the upgraded Dyna.
You kinda hit the nail right on the head here, comparing these two bikes is more like comparing apples to a sectional couch.
You can take almost anything, and make it better, especially with HD.
Coming from a dyna background myself, I know that the handling characteristics are better on the dyna than the RK.
But then upgrade the dyna with what it sounds like a couple thousand dollars of suspension work, and then compare it to a stock Ultra?? It's like comparing a slant 6 Chevy Nova to a worked Z06
I think if you compared both bikes straight out of the box you might have a different outcome. My last bike was an 06 Street Bob and without big $ suspension upgrades it had really crappy brakes, very limited cornering clearance and a high speed wobble. The only time my Dyna would handle better than my Limited was while backing into a parking spot.
All you have to do is upgrade your Ultra in the same way you upgraded your Dyna! Simples.
As for your observation about the Ultra's forks, the tubes are clamped by the bottom tree, but not the top tree, where they are only retained by what amounts to a large bolt from above. That is a grave weakness and something HDF sponsor Howard of Motorcycle Metal is working on.
Last I heard he is developing an entirely new set of trees, with substantial clamps for both tubes, plus larger diameter fork tubes with Ohlins cartridges, providing the external adjustment you have on your Dyna. Contact him for more details!
