I know these 2011s etc are running hot but just how hot is acceptable? Riding mine today (Stock 103), own a motorway (freeway to you guys stateside) travelling at a steady 80mph I could feel the heat haze coming up from the RHS of the motor, at one stage I thought I could actually smell burning and almost stopped to check things were ok. It was as if the bike was gonna break down at some point, checked running signs, oil pressure in the midway mark etc etc and kept going.
I had a 2010 which didnt feel as if it ran quite so hot and having added fuel mgment systems in the past I dont really get the view that one would make so much difference to this problem...
To be fair the bike is not run in yet having just done 700 miles but crikey I dont know how this is fairing in some of the hotter climates...
Cheers

Same thing with me ---- until this past Friday. Bought mine in June. (2011 103 Limited Ultra) I'd never felt so much heat in my life. I knew there had to be something wrong. Turns out, it was a tuning issue. I ended up with Vance & Hines Power Duals & Rush slip-ons. Heat is gone. (Well, obviously not GONE, but "normal.") I'm not a mechanic, but I've been told about these catalytic converters that really restrict airflow. The duals get rid of these "cats." Like I said, picked mine up on Friday after getting these vPower Duals on, and a dyno tune (from somebody who knows what they're doing), and no more excessive heat issue.
Look for some of my posts about this. I was getting pretty nervous & panicky about it.
I have a 2011 103CI. Am in the south of the US and we have months where we rarely see a day under 90 degrees.
When I first got the 103 it was running close to 300* oil temps (way too hot) on long runs. Dealership gave the standard "they all run hot, that is normal" reply to my several visits saying something was wrong. (am running Redline in engine and trans)
Here is what I have done so far to lower the temp.
1. Tank lift kit to get more air-flow over the engine
2. Replaced stock oil cooler w/ a Jagg fan assisted oil cooler
3. Cut out the catalytic converter
4. Installed Rush slip-ons
5. Installed v-ied's
6. Installed a Ness big sucker
The above lowered the temps to the 230-260 range on long runs. This is a huge drop, but I am still not comfortable with the oil being at 260, so I am pulling the v-ied's and remapping with a TTS. I believe this will get me down to the 220-240 range and I'll be comfortable with that.
It is unfortunate we have to spend $ and time on new bikes to get them right, but they are shipping them way too lean to meet gov. air standards.
Because of all the heat it sounds like you can't take delivery of a new 2011 or 2012 without replacing the exhaust headers, mufflers, air cleaner, and of course, a new tuner to make all that work.
On my '11 RKC, it runs hot also and smells of heat on occasion, but most of my radiant heat seems to be coming from the engine & pipes and not necessarily in the area of the cat.
I'm still going to be swapping the head pipes though for a set of FuelMoto Jackpots or Fullsac's for a little added performance, sound increase and coolness.
Air cleaner, slip ons and tune will come later I'm sure.

I had a 2008 SG with stage 1 and traded for 2011. Running the 11 stock for 1600 miles so far and no issue with heat.
I can tell you that one of our Crotch Coolers would really help you out with the Heat felt from the motor..Here is a link about our product,s... Click Here
I was suprised at how hot my 2011 Limited ran too. I rode it stock to the Smokey Mountains and was miserable from the heat. I installed the Fullsac header pipe, TTS MasterTune and Arlen Ness Big Sucker a/c a couple of weeks ago. What a huge difference in the temp. Even driving in city traffic is not a problem now. I think its a combination of all the the parts that really helped. The header pipe was the majority of it but I think the map they sent for the MasterTune helped alot too. I'm headed back to the Smokies this weekend to do the Dragon Tail again. Hope it's going to be a more comfortable ride.
2011 Limited here,1500 miles on odo, Stage 1, reflash, harley syn in all holes, and Rhinehart slip-ons...we were at or near 100 degree's for just about the entire month of July here in Jersey...bike never went over 260...mostly ran between 225-255 range. Of course this was checked with the HD digital dip-stick, so I'm not sure of the accuracy.
