Lets see if I can keep it going.... I have an 05 RK w/five spd tranny, it whines when I *decellerate* in forth gear. Love it because it lets me know when I'm in forth. Is it the same sound the new trannys make in fifth or are the six spd's worse? Of course you wouldn't know this unless you've ridden both. Just curious how loud the six spd whine really is.
BOTTOM LINE GUYS! There has not been A SINGLE REPORTED MECHANICAL FAILURE DUE TO WHINE OR EVEN CLATTER! Whine is normal for the 07, clatter, only a few out of many guys in the first wave of bikes say they have it, and they all bought bikes built in the first 45-60 days of production. My 07 is the best running, fastest harley i have ever owned, and I have owned many. It was hot in traffic, PCIII cured that, and with the air cleaner and v&h pipes woke her up, no ping, she has a slight whine in 5th but hardley notice it even with a open helmet, sure is quieter than the valve train on my 02, every year has its sounds and after everyone beats a dead horse on it for awhile they figure its normal then they move on. Moving on time is here.
My rideing friend just got the 07 ultra and said it has all kinds of unexplaned noises and loves it. I guss if you want a one piece goldwing go for it.
Sounds like a lot of clattering in the 07's. Maybe someone should start a new post about all the clattering. It's really a lot of clattering... and whining too. Yup, clattering and whining, whining and clattering. Clatter, clatter, clatter, whine, whine, whine. Anyway, back to the bikes!
Stay tuned for the latest post, "07 Tranny Probs part 27"!!
Just visiting from the Dyna forum. I have a 06 Dyna SuperGlide and its Transmision is smooth and Quiet. I was curious to see how the Full Dress crowd liked the Transmission. I think the compensator Sproket modification made to the bikes for the 07 models might be the cause of the clatter. One other item that the 06 Dyna's and O7 Big Twins might want to monitor is the Automatic chain tensioner. Mine is still fine, but it is concievable that the tensioner could ratchet too tight under the right circumstances. Good luck and ride safe. P.S. I checked some other brand forums and our Harley issues are minor compared to some other brands. Another brand that costs more and is popular has rear axle failures, transmissions that lock up at highway speeds, and have fuel tank vents that can crack. Victory ( Polaris) is leaving the owners holding the bag, so to speak. I have owned a few Japanese bikes. Fun but, they all suffered from front fork shimmy at highway speeds, and oil venting out the transmission part of the engine at highway speeds. My experience with my Harleys in the last 30 years have been great. Each newer Model was more relable than the model before. Remember we are riding a motorcycle. Motorcycles have character. ( Fun and Exciting) Not boring like a 4 wheeled vehicle.
Wildbill, I am also one of the unlucky ones with the bad clatter. I have an 07 Ultra Classic and am pretty much happy with it and is my 3rd Harley. I've ridden motorcycles all of my life and ride one everyday for a living. (a BMW thank God...not that i'd want one of them as a personal bike). The sad thing about the whole 07 bike issue is that until a few days ago, herley wouldn't even admit that the bikes had problems and had everyone so pissed off. You pay 23,100 for a bike that sounds like its gonna fly apart at any minute and the dealer says "thats normal". Come on...most of us are not total idiots...though i'm starting to wonder !! I have to be honest though, my dealer rode mine after my 3rd complaint and said that there was a problem and actually tried to find it. Harley should have stepped up to the plate first thing and told the unlucky ones that there is an issue with things. I know i would have felt alot better than getting the "thats normal gear noise" response like i have read on here. Mine is so loud that cars and other bikes running beside You can hear the clattering noise...its embarrassing! I just tell everyone thats "normal" and they are like dayum...i don't want one of them. Anyway. its a relief that there is one recall out anyway even though my dealer is unaware of it yet. I called them today about it. And hey Drod....You lucky devil you...find me a buyer on mine...i'll sure move it on!! Until then...lets keep our fingers crossed.
