Default Brake Light Switch Removal

How do you disconnect the connector to the rear brake light switch on a 2009 Road King? I need to take it off to troubleshoot why my brake light is staying on. It isn't obvious to me and I don't want to break it trying to get it off.

if you think its the switch just use a test light between the 2 wires if it works you will get a light when you hit the brake you can usually get the end of the test light into the open end of the wire

Did you ever remove your throttle side handlebar controls?
If you didn't do this properly, you could've damaged the brake light switch already.
You have to shim the brake lever before disassembly to keep the lever from damaging the switch.
If the lever switch is damaged, the brake light will stay on.

Most likely it's your front switch and the handlebar c clamp are too far away from each other causing the front brake lite switch to be open keeping the light on right?

Loosen the switch housing assembly slightly on the two screws on the housing. Then push it tight against clamp and tighten the screws while you hold it tight against the c clamp. That should fix it.

Gliden, thanks but I already tried that. I was wanting to disconnect the rear and see if I could rule that out before taking the front switch housing apart.

Could use some help. Hoping to know what parts I need tonight so I can do the hour and a half drive tomorrow to get the parts. All I need to know is how to pull the leads off the rear brake light switch.

Carefully pull them off with pliers or needle nose pliers.....they don't come off easy. I think I had to get mine started with a flat screw driver. They are on there tight so they don't vibrate off.

(added) Mine were plugged onto straight 1/4" tabs, even after getting them started they don't come off easy. Just becareful of the plastic covers....

Good luck

The only brake light you have is in the rear! You have to check the front brake lever and the foot pedal. Don't just assume it's the foot pedal.

Thanks Stub. I was just hesitant to do it and then break the connectors because I didn't know there was some hidden release latch. Took of the wires and the brake light went off (thank God I don't have to put in a front brake switch). Thanks again.

I just removed it by pulling with a small pliers if were talking about the rear switch located on the lower frame on the right side of the bike while sitting on it And then just unscrewed the switch
