Thanks for the thorough response. I rode my bike to the dealer yesterday and talked with the service manager there. He's a cool guy and I believe he will try to get the MoCo to see it my way. I called the MoCo customer service line and pleaded my case. I told them I'm active duty (never hurts to remind them) and I've owned the bike since new. When I gave him the VIN he noted that I had the starter and clutch pak replaced in Feb. I told him that at that time I has similar noises from the primary. He then gave me a reference number and told me to have Don (the service manager) give him a call next week with what they found in my primary. He said it's not that far out of warranty and they might be able to cover it... Wouldn't that be cool!? I'm hoping so because I don't feel like writing a check for $500 or more for this repair. As for my riding habits, I've been riding for years and I don't beat on my bikes. When starting out from a light, I always get off the clutch as quickly as possible rather than ride it and add excessive wear and tear to the clutch plates. An interesting side note is that I've always run synthetic oil in my primary. However, when the dealer performed the warranty work in Feb they installed standard H-D primary fluid. I didn't have time to change it out so I've just ridden it that way for the last 5K miles. I'm sure that's not what caused this IPB issue, but is IS interesting. As soon as I get the official diagnosis next week, and also find out if the MoCo is going to make good on the repair, I'll post. Thanks again.
My 09 Ultra had the same issue, inner primary bearing a year ago. Dealer said the 09 touring bikes had a batch of bad bearings go out. Bike had 22k miles on it at the time.
More than likely its the inner primary bearing. I had the same problem with my 09 SG at only 11k miles. It was still under warranty but I wanted a chrome inner primary so I just did it myself because it came with the bearing installed. While is was in there I did the SE Comp too.
I told the dealer to give me the quote for the SE Comp upgrade and I will spring for it, even if the MoCo doesn't cover the repair under warranty. I figure while it's apart I might as well do it. I wonder if the IPB has a screamin' eagle equivalent that I could have installed in place of the OEM and just pay the difference?
Just got my bike back. Dealer replaced the IPB and the MoCo stood behind the repair! Man, I'll tell ya, I don't care what I read here on the forum, H-D DOES attempt to remain in good stead with their client base. I called their customer service line and explained to them that my bike's warranty expired on 4/1/11. I also explained that this was my 4th new Harley, I was active duty military (never hurts to mention) and that I felt that I had a valid claim consider that I take excellent care of my bikes. The end result is that they stood behind their product. Bike's fixed and H-D customer service is A-okay in my book. BZ to Bayside Harley of Portsmouth, VA, too. Those guys ROCK! Don, their service manager, really understands the art of customer service and his professionalism carries over into the work his guys perform. I couldn't be happier. Ride on... at least for another 30K until the IPB $hits the bed again. LOL!
