Absolutely correct. Dealers will always negotiate from the sticker price and tell you that the OTD cost will be "plus dealer prep, freight, doc fees and taxes".

Even buyers who are less than shrewd can negotiate an OTD price equal to the opening price on the sticker (since the dealer always add fees to the sticker) and still get a 20% discount on their first purchase.

It's even better. Yes, dealers get a return on freight charges at year end; but they also are credited with a flat fee for dealer prep, yet many dealers will charge the customer the credited amount and then some!

Thanks. I learned something new today but I'm not really surprised. I bought my bike used with very low mileage, but I can guarantee you that if I was on the market for a new one today, I wouldn't even accept to pay MSRP, let alone frivolous add-on fees except tax and title.

I know some disagree but I am a start negotiation on second to last day of
month, tell them I'm buying SOMEWHERE before month end, and complete on last day.

I always seem to get a better deal that way. Not sure if dealers really get incentives
for units moved or not but dont pay msrp that way.

Right now is the best time to get a leftover 2011. All will be gone before too long.

I have heard similar stories from clothes, to parts, to bikes on this.

Not really sure this is such a shrewd move if it is true. HD forced
its dealer base to go to these huge facilities now and they are
going to limit their ability to make sales? Good luck on paying
for those buildings.

Sounds like good ( read bad ) business for the franchise to me.

If dealer A can sell, and be happy with a number that is less than B, they
should be able to do it without threat of reduced inventories.

By my calculation, a dealer only has to sell a few more than 200 T-shirts to make the same as they do on a bike.

If your in the market for a 2011 Limited in 2 tone root beer send me a PM. Bike has 1800 miles on it and a few accessories. It's just like new and still has over a year warranty. Could probably let it go for $22,500 but that's pretty firm. I'm gettin out of the bike business and into the boat business.

I had learned that HD marks up their bikes and options by 30%. Take the MSRP, subtract 30% and that should be the approximate dealer cost.
