I am a newbie and I have searched the forum so I apologise in advance if I've still missed an appropriate thread. I am looking to purchase a Ultra Classic in a few months and my $12-13,000 budget is somewhere around 2000-2003 with average miles (I think). Where can I get some info on the changes between the FLHTCUI model years and what model year may have been better? (without upsetting anyone) I have read the posts that have mentioned EFI upgrades and the like but the HD Dealer I spoke with wasn't to sure about anything pre2005. Suggestions please anyone.
Probably the biggest change is the switch from the Magnetti-Marelli EFI system to the Delphi system which occurred in '02. Also some of the earlier builds in '00 had problems with the inner cam bearing. In '03 the dimensions of the rear wheel and (I think) the drive belt changed. Also in '03 HD introduced a new style bearing on the crank; it has proved troublesome in some cases, mostly with heavily modded engines. From the years you mentioned (actually for all years for that matter), I'd try to find an '02. That model doesn't have the cam bearing issue, but it does have the new EFI system.
