The Harley ones are a pain to install. It is almost impossible to get to the top bolt.
They do make a noticeable difference. The right side guard did not fit over my new pipes. I rode without it for a couple days until my right leg began to cook. I notched it to fit the pipe and installed it. What a difference!
I put the HD shields on. They are a PIA to install, but they work well and I think they look pretty good.
I agree on all counts. It's personal preference but I don't care for some of the leather ones I've seen, I like the rigid ones better. Some of the leather ones look like they would be rubbing the paint on the side covers if you weren't careful.

I have the HD ones and they are a good improvement, easy to install on the later models put a set on my buddies 05 crap there is not enough room to put a feeler gage in there let alone your hands or tools.
You might as well jump on the band wagon, every other dealer has. I looked at them all and the HD ones are the only ones that look good. They were easy to install and work well, but maybe you can improve on them. Just don't make them big and ugly.
