A lot of guys are talking down on the Thundermax auto tune and DTT because a 'good' tune can be had for much cheaper on a dyno. Looking arouind this forum and others there are many, many riders that ask about problems with their dyno tune. The fact is that there are many hacks tuning on dynos and they give the game a bad name. Many would come out cheaper by using Thundermax or DTT when compared to many 'dyno tunes' that just don't live up to the sales pitch. Step right up and bet on a good dyno tune. Do you feel lucky sucker? Just food for thought. Once a tuner has proved he is not very competent in tuning a SERT or PC do you really want him beating your bike to death on the dyno trying to learn how to do his job? It's easy to give out advice to get a dyno tune if you were 'lucky'. If I knew a great dyno tuner the decision would be easy for me as well. Rolling the dice on dyno time being effective is something I can live without. There just is no reliable way to weed out the bad tuners. That's what makes the auto tune and DTT so attractive to me.

I think it would be great at a big event like bike week or something, to have a stack of pre-printed cards with a web-site like forum, such as this. That those who have had a through at getting their bike dyno'ed be handed that card.

Have simple little bit of instructions for those who have just gone through the dyno. Like, this is a poll on your dyno tune, please ride a minimum (say 20 to 100 miles) and then go to this www.??????.com and list your tuner / make / yr / make / model / carb or FI and cc's of your bike and list the results. This will only take 5 minutes of your time. And will help promote accuracy in tuning for the industry!

Then this would be a real way to find out who knows what, when and where!

I got this idea from those who take your picture at events, they sell the photo back to you by handing you a business card and you go see yourself on the web-site and by a professional shot at the event you forgot to bring a camera to.

Its just a shame that I don't know how to financially entice anyone to hand out those cards, unless it would be a counter add against dyno tuners sponsored by Zippers or Thundermax or DTT or Alpha N folks.

Now that would give us all some proof in the pudding!

Budz,

Great post.

I do not know of anyone who’s dyno run is the way they would drive their bike. To me the best dyno is the one you sit on.

The Thundermax bashers are just that, bashers who do/will not accept that things change. Maybe for the better maybe for the worse.

Lets face it none of us like it when our mouse trap is replaced by a better mouse trap.

You nailed it on the long term economics of either the DTT or the Thundermax. With PCII or SERT, make a modification, take it to the tuner, pay the money drive and get pissed off, return to the tuner pay more money etc.

I installed the Thundermax in July 2006 and just put the Auto Tune last week. I have about 500 miles on the Auto Tune and it is really kicking. With this set up if I change cams, heads, air cleaner, exhaust, bore it, stroke it, whatever, this setup will handle it with a simple map reload (around 120 maps today and adding more) and the Closed Loop mode and some driving time.

Once you buy the other products you install them and that is it, “You own itâ€. With the Thundermax, 30 days to try with a money back guarantee. Why would you not try it.

You nailed it on the long term economics of either the DTT or the Thundermax.

PhilM,

I am very happy with the money I have spent on it.

Nothing radical yet. SE/AC and Rinehart 2:1 I have a 06 Dyna Super Glide so when I did my Rinehart it was newly release as was most everything on the 06 Dyna. Dealer did the work and tried several downloads to get the thing running right. They tried 6 different ones and there was always something going on. Back firing , stumbling, surging(already had the 25 injectors in it) dead after about 5400 and MPG went south.

Of course SERT and dyno time was the fix. I bucked the system and got the Thundermax. End of problems. Ran like all get out. Pulled strong to 6000(figured I needed head work & cams to get to the full 6200 or beyond). Plugs were now a tan color vs new fallen snow white. Took it back to the dealer & had the Service Manager drive it. He got off the bike went to the computer and gave me a store voucher for the 150 for the download. (Voucher was okay for me since I had other things I wanted to put on).

Put the Auto Tune on and now pulls strong as hell all the way to 6200. Vibration @ all rpms is much less. Was on a group ride on Sunday and everyone was asking what I had done. The said the bike sounded different (better, sounds like a 70’s muscle car) and they noticed I seemed to be able to pull away from them vs keeping up with them. This was from guys with 95 & 103 Softails, and Touring bikes.

I am planning on boring, cams & heads next fall. I follow several forums and here are a couple of different builds and their comments.

Hope this helps

I am running the AutoTune module on my 103" SEEG. It runs great, noticably better than pre AutoTune. As far as MPG, on a 40% hiway @ 70mph, 60% around town I am getting about 38-39. Thats up about 5 mpg from where I was with the same map without the AutoTune. I have done a little experimenting by adjusting for economy mode around 2800-3200 rpms to a AFR of 14.5, leaving the rest of the map alone at 13.1. Weather is too bad to ride much, so will have to wait until next week to play around some more.
I am running the 575 cams with D&D Fat Cats.

Just came back from riding and a little bar hopping and all can say is, it's running smoother and smoother, plus it seems to have more power.
The engine even sounds better.
