The stock is designed to be run as is out of the box.. If you hold it up to the light you will notice it's rather dense. However I do not believe it would turn to mush as much oil as these V twins throw out. If you hold one of these wasable SE style filters up to the light you can see thru it. They need all the help they can get, hence oil. I worked on one the other day that someone must have taken a air gun too a little too vigorous. It has numerious places that it appeared to be completely open. You could not see it till you held it up to the light. Crap like this is probably not doing a lot of filtering.

Not to hijack this thread, but I put on a Arlen Ness Big Sucker set up the other day. Does this filter need oil, it looks to be like a K&N but no mention of adding oil and none supplied?

I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand what your saying, don't use any oil on the stock filter or yes use oil on it? I thuoght the service manual said something about using oil...I could be wrong tho. If its yes use oil, what type are we using I've got KN recharge oil is that good?

Stock Harley's come with a paper airfilter, that requires no oil.
