I just did this run on 3 Sep; the entire length. Still a little early for leaves to change.
The fog upon my approach to Big Meadow was unbelieveable. Literally, you couldn't see
five feet in front of you. When I fueled up at the pump (yes...they now have gas pumps
on Skyline Drive..), I had to get within 12 inches of the display to see how much I owed.
I stayed in the thick fog for about another ten miles down the mountain (towards Front
Royal entrance). Mine third ride up there and I've never seen the fog so thick as this time.
Personally....I would avoid Skyline Dr and skip right to Blueridge pwky. Skyline seems to be very very touristy and lots of VERY slow moving vehicles...this is my opinion and others might disagree.
I was out there in August. We were going to ride Skyline, but were warnned of bad fog. So, the ride was aborted. Folks who were with me headed to Winchester HD. My girl didn't feel well, so I dropped her back at the hotel. Then, I decised to just hit back roads in the area.
This is where GPS is nice, cuz I could pretty much glance down to make sure I didn't take dead end roads. I had a blast. Didn't have the views of Skyline, but the riding was fun: twistys and roller coasters. Actually, the scenery was still pretty good.
