I installed some Polk 521's in my 2011 ultra fairing, but I'm lost in how to wire it. The stock speakers just have two prongs and the Polks have four at the top and bottom with a crossover gadget. I don't know what to do. I tried just using the top connections, but nothing. I thought this was a simple plug and play, but obviously there is more to this than I know. I didn't buy a amp, I was going to just use the stock radio. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Yes I did get them installed and they sound a lot better than the stock speakers. They are slightly less loud but are crystal clear cranked up all the way to 30. I actually had to shift the balance to the front by a notch or two as I can now hear the rear speaker "Noise" over the front speakers.

As for the install, well, it was a PITA but most of that was my own fault. I needed to know where the speaker leads were coming from before I started so I basically tore down the front and left side of the bike to see where they were going. I had posted on here asking is someone had a schematic for the 08' but could wait and started tearing into it. I came back a little later and someone posted up a schematic and had the information I needed. But it was too late, I had already found out by taking the bike apart.

Besides that part of it, that I did not need to do, the install went a little rough on the 1st side but once I got to the other side, I found a better way to do it. All that you need to do on an 06' and up is take the speaker and line it up with the mounting holes on the stock speaker and trace out the profile on the stock one. Then cut the new speaker. You also need to do the same thing to the mounting ring that comes with the Polk mm651's, bolt it to the speaker, trace it out then cut it too.
They will now bolt right up to the stock mounting locations. You will have to buy some longer 10-32 screws though as the mounting ring is about 3/8" or so thick. There is no getting around the spacer ring, you have to use it as the polk will hit the back of the speaker boxes and will not seat.

Disconnect the tweeters and pull them out and just use the speaker lead that went to the woofer and connect it to the input on the crossover that is supplied with the Polk's, then connect both sets of new leads to the two sets of inputs on the Polk. Each speaker comes with a crossover and each speaker has two separate sets of inputs, one for the tweeter and one for the woofer.

I think you said yours is an 02' ? If so, you have smaller speakers in the front and you may not be able to use these. I am asuming that so long as the dimensions of the meter panels, ect are about the same, the only difference may just be the size of the holes. Maybe you can just trim the holes to the required 5" and it may fit.
I can't help you there, all I can tell you is I did get them installed on my 08' and they just barely fit without some modifications to the bike. I did have to grind off a little on the dash to get it to snap back in place. It was touching the bottom of the speaker because of how far it sits out now.

My review of these speakers? They definitly sound much better than stock. The supplied crossovers that come with them do a great job of only sending the signals the speaker is capable of producing.
I did find out two things. The front speaker lead is split right before the speaker. One lead goes to the tweeter that has it's own capacitor or whatever it's called (crossover) but the woofer does not have anything that I can see. It appears that the stock woofer was getting a full range signal with no filtering.
I did attempt to connect the Polk woofer up to the raw lead coming from the amp with no crossover. It was so loud I could not stand near the speaker at anything above 23. Not a good loud either, get ear bleeding noise mixed with music. That explained to me why the Polks are not as loud as the stock speakers.
Don't get me wrong, they are very close in max volume but you can notice the difference.
The big difference is the quality of the sound they produce. They are absolutely crystal clear with no noticable distortion even cranked up as high as it will go.
There is more mid range now and slightly more bass.
All in all, I am glad I did it and I will be changing out the rear speakers next week to try and clean up the noise!

 

4 prongs top and bottom?????? Give me some pics of the speakers and I'll help out.

 

What I see on the polk website is the top cnnections are for the coaxal speaker and the bottom connections are for the crossover. I need to know where the wire from the crossover goes to get its power. Do you use the stock speaker wires? If you go to Polk website and look at the MM521 you can see what kind of speaker it is. I'm not good with pics and and downloading. I have the speakers installed already. I just can't figure out how to wire them to make them work....lol Thanks

 

Ok now I see in the polk pix, the side from the crossover that has the 4 prongs goes to the speakers 2 top, 2 bottom. The other end of the crossover wires (the ones with the stripped ends go to the speaker wires from the bike. In your original post I thought you were saying there were 4 prongs on both the top and bottom.

 

so speaker wires on the bike go to crossover, mind the polarity (+/- )

crossover outs go to lugs on speaker ( mind polarity) if not marked on the speaker, the lugs which connect to the paper cone are the full range or woofer- depending how they are marked. the other would be the tweeter

I hooked it up this way and no sound. I hooked the stripped ends to the stock speaker wires and nothing. If I had it hooked up correct I need to go back and check the connections.

 

Hmmm... Mine were just plug in play. I didn't have a crossover to deal with.

 

The connections on the speakers are all different sizes and fit only one way, so I have that right. I hooked the stripped ends from the crossover to the stock speaker wires, but no sound. I think there must be a bad connection somewhere.
