Default RE: RK or RKC?

I've owned both...a 1999 RKC and currently a 2005 RK. I like the looks of the RKC for sure...but hated cleaning the spoke wheels and WWW tires. So when I sold the 1999 I got a RK. I like the mags better and the skinny white stripe tires...looks more like a "cop bike" to me. I also like the lockable hard bags...but picked up a set of RKC leather bags on eBay for a few hundred dollars and run with them. I guess I'm just kinda picky about scratching the hard bags...so I switch them out a lot. I only use the hard bags on trips where I want to keep things secure. Either way the RKC and the RK are great bikes. It's the RK for me though.

Me and my 03 RKC (95cu stage 1 SE slip-ons) went on a little ride this past summer (solo)... 'bout 11K by the time we were done. 3 weeks later I bought my 07 Ultra. The RKC is great on trips from 500-1000 miles, but after two weeks on the road I began to wish for small things that just weren't there - fairing (though the extra tall windshield does a fair job), storage (I stuffed my saddlebags and T-bags full), tunes (radio versus mp3 player). Saints be praised for the adjustable rider backrest I put on before I hit the road though... (can I get an AMEN from the choir?)

The coolest thing about the RKC is that I can take the windshield and passenger backrest, uh sissybar, off and it's an entirely different looking and handling bike - a definite boulevard cruiser. I picked the Ultra because I intend on doing twice as much OTR riding next summer and I knew I wasn't going to be happy taking my RKC out on that long a ride again.

IMHO the RKC has the RK beat hands down on "curb appeal", if that's the most important aspect of what you're thinking. IF (big IF), you're looking at a scoot for long distance touring, consider another style like an EG or RG. If you like the idea of "2 for the price of one" (quick convertability) then go with the RKC, but it just doesn't pass muster on the long long long distance rides.
