So after scouring all the threads about the seemingly recent hot topic of audio upgrades, I see that some utilize Marine Grade recievers and others have used just "standard" recievers.
I know no radio, Marine Grade or not, is waterproof (except the stock HK is pretty dang close).
I am looking at upgrading my stereo, but I am concerned about it crapping out on me. I know I would use a splash guard when washing the bike, and in downpours (which I tend to avoid if possible, but hell, sometimes you get caught).
In your guy's experience, are Marine Grade worth it? How does a standard reciever hold up to a splash of water, or a light drizzle? I know precautions would need to be implimented for washing the bike.
I want to do this right the first time, so I'm looking for all the advice I can get.
I don't know how well a standard unit would hold up. I put an Alpine marine unit on my RG about 2 years ago. I don't cover it when washing, don't cover it when the bike is out and it rains, play it while riding in the rain. Still working fine as for right now (hope this reply doesn't jinx me).
I've had a Kenwood deck installed past couple of years with no issues. Batwings d a pretty good job of keeping the faceplate reasonably dry in rains with no issues. I really don't know how water resistant marine grade radios are but they have better circuitry protection from corrosion in salt water elements. Another thing to check is steering wheel control compatibilty with marine grade stereos. You'll need that ability to use the H-D hand controls .....

The kit from Hawg Wired works with mine OK. The only thing I don't have anymore is the automatic volume control. I believe they may have that now, but didn't when I bought mine.

I have to agree my Alpine media player is great and it looks cool with the blue gauges.

Yeah, that is definitely a for sure front runner for me. Where did you mount your iPod? I want mine in the saddlebag. I see it comes with a 6.4' usb cord. Is it long enough? Or did you have to get an extra long iPod cord/usb extender? Even if the included usb cord gets to the seat I would be happy. It seems in pictures to be pretty beefy so it would stand up well on a bike.
What kit did you use to install it? Biketronics? Hawg Wired? Do you use a splash guard with it (or would one even fit with that big **** in the middle)?

The cord supplied let's the ipod sit in the bottom of my extended bag. I used the Hawgwired kit. Never tried a splash guard. Just use common sense when washing.
sweet! thank you for the quick reply. I think I am looking at the Alpine receiver, Rockford amp, and Polk MM speakers. I think that will accomplish everything I'm looking for my stereo to do. Once again, thanks!

That is the set up I have. I'm very happy with it.
