I have been worrying about my cam tensioners since I have 22,000 miles and have wanted to take a look at them. My question is what is the torque setting for the inspection cover bolts? I know I have to replace the gasket and use a dental mirror for the inner one. I just had my oil changed with synthetic and wondered if I could reuse it if I kept everything clean? Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Never reuse old oil, even if it's brand new. I would put a few more miles on the bike & check the tensioners when it gets too cold to ride, which in your neck of the woods should only be a few more weeks. Then, dumping the oil will be cost effective. At 22K miles, you need to start thinking about the tensioners, but I wouldn't consider it an immediate priority just yet.
Actually it's more of a judgement call on the inner since even with the mirror you really need to compared to front how far its down. When I poped my cover the gasket looked fine and I put a thin wipe of rtv on it. You do not mention year but is it's 2006 or later with roller chain you will have no wear other then the outer link groove. Ignore that. Put a picture on here when you do it. I have my check in an album under grf00. You will loose about 1/4 qt when cover comes off, just sump oil scavenger pump misses. Bolts call for 125-155 in lbs torque. Be sure to break and retighten in correct order. I'll post if you need that. These small bolts in AL I just run up snug and tweek allen wrench slightly. Run warm and re-snug. Does not take much. Very easy to break off and torque with a wrench unless the threads are good shape will strip them.

Thats kind of what Ive been thinking. Its been hard to enjoy myself thinking a 70.00 piece of plastic could wipe out my engine at any time. I would have done it when i changed my oil but I just discovered the problems people have had with the tensioners. Oh yeah I have an 06 street glide.

I thought you had to drain all the oil to check? If I only have to add 1/4 quart, thats not bad. I do need the order to snug the bolts. Thanks for the help, my next purchase will be a service manual.

Your engine is dry sump. Your oil tank is attached under your transmission. Being an 06 you have a system that will last 100K. It has the roller chain and not the flat link chain. Your looks like 1 (that one has 90K) and my 04 like 2 (has 30 K) and 3 how my style wears. it just keeps wearing. Style 1 once rollers roll does not wear anymore

BTW....when I inspected mine....I re-used the gasket...tightened the cover to german torque...and I don't think I lost enough oil to add any.
I kept the bike on the kickstand at an angle. Did it in the garage.
I did not change my oil just for the inspection. You will need exhaust head pipe gaskets though.
I got the small pick and mirror set from Walgreens.
