I checked my 04's at 22,000 and there was barely any wear, I did it just for the peace of mind. Not really that big of job, for me getting the exhaust off was the hardest part, for some reason I couldn't get mine apart for nothing

I finally got around to checking the tensioners. At 23,000 miles my inner one had almost no wear and my outer had barley any wear. I think Ill re-check at 30,000 miles. Thanks for all the help/info.

Mine ('06 SG) looked worse that those posted pics at 6K mi. Went to a gear drive set-up and never looked back. Had a couple of buds that had chunked and grooved before 10K mi. Gear drives for them too.
It's expensive either way you go (gear drive or hydraulic) but I highly recommend trash-canning those spring tensioners right away.
Sure there are those that inspect them and have even replaced them with new spring units. I could never trust them and was glad I looked them over when I did and changed out. Those things are a ticking bomb and just because they look good doesn't mean they can't self destruct at any moment.

Gotta disagree with those who think they'll last 100,00 just because it's a newer TC88. Regardless of the chain, they are still subject to cracks. I replaced mine at 30K, and even though they were not worn bad, one had a nice crack all the way up one side. You can see it on the left one in this picture. Plastic is subject to heat stresses, and we all know how hot these engines get.

I am planning on just upgrading to hydraulic tensioners and new cams at 30k. I figure Ill do it this time next year and that gives me some time to save the $1000.00 dollars to do it.
