Had a non-matching HD leather tour pack on my bike, and it made all of the difference in the world to get the matching one that you will see in my sig.. do it, and you won't be sorry!
Question - Is it worth it to spend the $$ on buying a matching color tour pack for my Road King (have sunglo red two tone paint) for $800+ or just get the Gran Tailgater Bag from Kuryakyn $300+ with tax. Given my unique paint color finding a tour pack on E-bay that matches doesn't seem to be an option. While I no doubt would save $$ going the Kuryakyn route I do have the money to get the tour pack. Thoughts???
I dont think its worth the cost. But - I can't really recommend going with Kuryakyn either. I have had some real bad luck with some of their products.
I bought a Saddleman touring bag and absolutly love the thing. It was well under $300 + tax - from Dennis Kirk. slips off and on the sissy bar in no time. Has more room than the tour pack, easier to store too. I do not like the hard tour pack look anyways. prefer not to have it on the bike. The Saddleman only goes on when needed.
If you dont plan on keeping it on the bike all the time - not worth the cash.
I have a tour pack for my 2007 Road King. I used it on one long, 9 day trip last year. It was nice to have the storage but I don't like the way it looks on the bike or the way the bike handles with it on. It sits in the basement 95 percent of the time.
I bought a large T- Bags type touring bag for my next trip. I like the fact that I can just unhook the bag and carry the whole thing into the hotel or wherever I am staying the night. I don't ride two up, so no concerns there.. My fiancé has her own street glide.
I will probably sell the tour pack soon since I never use mine.
You're looking at about $1500 when its all said and done for Harley Tour Pak, Mounting Bracket, Backrest, liner, painting ect...
I am fortunate that my 11 RKC is vivid black so the Tour Pack I ordered from http://www.powerproductsparts.com worked perfectly without needing to be painted. These tour packs are exact copies of the Harley Tour Pak except that they are made of fiberglass instead of plastic as the new one from Harley are. I compared mine to my buddies 2011 Ultra limited and the walls of my box are at least a 1/4" thicker. The stock Harley box requires the use of a metal reinforcing plate in the bottom to make up for the lack of strength in the box. I got mine two weeks ago for the Key West Poker run and it is FREAKIN great!! The wife liked it a bunch too. I got mine with the standard lid (it normally comes with a wing on the lid) because I intend to put the Mustang Leather cover on top to carry the flow with the leather saddle bags. With shipping I paid about $650 I already had the Backrest and the detachable mount. Which you can get for about $200 each. The box comes black and you can have it painted to match. So you will still be a little over 1K but it is most definitely worth it if you plan on taking weekend trips with the wife!!
You have to love the "detachable" hardware. It gives you the best of both worlds. I notice a lot of folks checking into the hotels at the runs with their various detachable hardware (I guess the crooks like the detachable stuff too).
If you ride 2 up at least 50% of the time I think the Tour Pak is a nice option. It makes it so easy to quickly gear.
I got a color matched one for my Road Glide. Call Rebecca at Tri Co Harley. She'll take good care of you. I have just barely over a grand in it. I doubt I ever take it off.
