I've got a detachable TP for my FLHXSE. I bought it for my wife and I to do overnighters in the mountain towns in CO.
Most days, my bike is stripped down to a 1 up configuration. Solo seat, no back rest, etc etc. But the added storage the TP offers is amazing.
Having it when you need it, is great. Being able to take it off when not, even better.
But, since it's a painted part, you're going to have to order it anyway. Don't buy it from your local dealer, unless you like paying full price and sales tax. I picked up the 4point hardware, mounting plate, liner, and king tour pak from lshd1.com. 20% off, free shipping, and no tax.
I think its worth it. I dont like putting a back seat on and when I am taking a trip I have my solo seat on and put my tour pack on and my tbag fits puuurfectly in my tour pack.
Plus if I ever did need to do the whole back seat thing and mountmy tbags on the backseat the tourpack will just give me extra room.
If you travel with your bike it's worth it if not dont bother. Good luck.
FYI! FREE SHIPPING within the U.S. AND REDUCED Shipping for our international friends - through 11/28/11! ENJOY!!
AND we have our new TourPack BULLET Secure! Secures all 4-point docking systems on inside and outside cams! Just released! Secure your Tour-Pak, Sissy Bar and luggage rack...
In my frank opinion, which might not be that popular, is that they look stupid on Road Kings.
Honestly, I'm not into them at all, unless you have a partner that rides with you all the time. Another unpopular opinion I'm sure, is that I think a guy that rides around solo 90% of the time with a big two-up tour pack looks ridiculous as well. Or it says, "look, my wife let me buy a Harley."
To each their own, I am planing on putting a tour-pak on my FLTRX and it will be permanent. I like, and will use the extra storage and I don't care what I look like on my ride, I aint in it for the "cool factor".
As for the "look, my wife let buy a Harley" I wouldn't know, aint got one of them no more.
Definitely worth the cost! I traveled for 5 years on my Night Train with a T-Bag and saddlebags, nothing was lockable and I had to unpack it every night. Makes for a cleaner looking ride on a trip.
Both on a vacation ride. I packed a bunch more stuff on the Roadie with the TP. Also better weather protection.
