Hello everyone, new to the forum and hoping to get some advise on a slight problem I am facing. Hopefully posting in the right place here...
I had a bone head moment working on my 97 Ultra Classic the other day. While doing some maitnance on it I removed the right muffler. I managed to damage it while re-installing it. I really like the mufflers, Hooker Tuned Flow, and would like to replace with the same.
My question is as follows...
I am having trouble finding a set that are for my year. I have however found a set that fit the 85-94 model at a very reasonable price. If I am right the ony difference is the width of the bolt holes on the rear hanger. If this is the case (which would also count on me being right and I am not holding my breath on that) could I simply make a new flat bracket that slips in the rubber grommet and bolt these up?
So for clarification, in theory, the pre-95's should be just fine on my 97...? Did you happen to notice if the bolt holes on the bracket were the same? Thanks for the reply, this may save me a fortune and a night in the dog house. Don't get me wrong, it is a big dog house, I built it that way just in case.
Also, if it makes a difference, I have what I believe to be aftermarket head pipes converting it to a true-dual set up. I am unsure of who manufactured them but they were on it when I bought it. The previous owner told me he had them put on but I never asked who made them.
I was waiting for someone to ask... now is where I look like a retard. I was slipping it back on and having a battle of will power with it. I don't like to lose so thought I would gently use a big hammer and wrap the muffler with a towel to just slowly tap it back in to place. which was going great until I caught it just righ and the slash cut folded just enough to make a mess of things and destroy the chrome. I bent it back which does not look pretty either. Still functions and sounds great, just kinda ugly. I would buy a matching shell and just replace the outside if I could but I can buy this other set very cheap. Am just hoping that it would bolt on to the bike.
If you ever make it to my dusty little desert town Ill buy you a beer for the info!
Not sure how bad the damage is. You could swap the right over to the left side to limit the fugly look while you wait for just what you want to show up on here or on Craig's list. Google up Chrome paint auto mufflers and you might find a product that will hide the damage a little more as well.
I am hoping we're getting to the point where a lot of winter build take-offs are going to start hitting the market. Lots of stuff I think I want for my new-to-me ride and I am hoping that is what happens in the winter anyway.
Well, its right on the tip. About the only part which sticks out past the saddle bags. This can has some damamge that I can't do anything about anyhow. There was a rust buble forming on the underneath side that did not yet affect the functionality however will at some point. I will probably just set them on the shelf incase I ever find one can somewhere. These truly are the best pipes I have ever had on a bike. Between the DEEP rumble and the performance gains then add in the fact I can tune them I just did not want to go to something else. Now add in the fact that I don't have a lot of money to spend and it suddenly gets more complicated. I think that I am going to order these for the earlier model and take a shot at it.
Ok, so this is what I have discovered. First I would like to pass on a great deal to some fellow bikers. Holley / Hooker has some unbelieveable deals on pipes on Ebay right now. Many makes and models for $49.00 plus S&H. They did not have any that fit my era Ultra but have some that fit the 85-94. I believe that these will bolt on to the later model howeve if not will only take a slight modification. I will keep you posted. They have tons for Softails and some other models. Just look up "Hooker Harley" and you will see what I am talking about. And no, I am not affiliated with them in any way. Just like the sound of what I had on mine before I screwed them up...
So I received my mufflers and I can not make them work without running the risk of messing them up beyond repair. It looks like the head pipe and the muffler are both 1 3/4 pipes. So if anyone has the idea of doing what I did, don't it wont work. Fortunately I think I can sel my mufflers on Craigslist for what I have in them...
