Ok, who has done it? Have to remove mine for custom painting. Looks straightforward to me but so DID a lot of things before. Tips, tricks, warnings?

Ive taken mine on and off without removing the wheel. But either way you have to bend the lock tab on each bolt back then remove the four bolts, leave one in a couple threads so it doesnt drop on you. Than remove while securing fender and slide down and out of forks. If you leave the wheel on you may have to remove the calipers and squeeze the mount area and rotate the fender out the back. While doing this method you can mask the fender to avoid scratches, reverse procedure to install.

Pretty straight forward. Take the tire off first, then you have to remove the locking tabs on the inside. Use a small screwdriver and hammer to bend them flat. Make sure you are holding the fender when removing the bolts. Especially the back ones

Great advice, a little masking tape will go along way to prevent scratches.

Would rather not remove the wheel if at all possible. I was wondering if there was an "inner" fender or not, ie some kind of mud guard fender under the top fender.

Nope 1 piece fender unless you have all the gingerbread on it like an EG. Like I said tape the fender with blue painters tape, the only problem when you get the custom painted one it may not be cured long enough to tape up. Ask your painter, But roll the fender back in from behind like lay it on the wheel and rotate up, youll have to pinch the mounted area toclear the forks, install 2 bolts kiddy corner and button up. you only need to bend 1 tab not both. Id run a chaser in the fork holes to make sure theres no crap in there, I think it is 5/16 fine thread

There are probably washers between the fender and forks--can't say for sure since I'm not familiar with your model. Be sure to save them when you remove the fender.

As for not removing the front wheel, the job is soooo much easier with the wheel removed. Borrow a buddy's bike jack or buy one--the scissor-type jack can be had for $40 or so.

+1 on the blue painter's tape.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

Do yourself a favor - remove front tire...makes this much easier & less liable to cause damage.

This might depend on model / year.

My 11 EG and 11 SG did not have any spacers / washers?
