S&S makes a new 80db SPO muffler now.
Recently my brother got a ticket on the NYS Parkway (Lake Ontario) by a NYS Trooper.
All the Trooper was looking for was the EPA compliance stamps.
This was the first I've heard of anyone getting ticketed this way.
They weren't concerned with sound output , just the compliance stamps.
His bike is not particularly loud , but he was riding alone at the time.

Due to rice burners? LOL. Yeah, HD owners don't believe in "loud pipes save lives." Too funny.
I'm interested to know what the "legal" pipes sound like too.
I don't need or rock straights, but I likie a deep rumble+thunder.
I think you missed my point. There are a few exceptions, but Harley's sound good loud, unless they are over the top loud most people don't gripe about them. I have never heard a rice burner/metric bike that sounds anywhere close to as good as a Harley. And there are more of them. you see/hear them all day long, and they sound like crap! My theory is if it was only Harley's with loud pipes, which sound pretty good to even most cagers, we wouldn't be hearing all this stuff about loud motorcycles.
The Bub Stealths have the EPA stamp, as do all the Screamin' Eagle mufflers.
Thanks for that info. I just went back to a stock header with 4" Jackpots. They sound good, but I guess I'm getting old and want something a little more quieter. I've got a set of V&H dresser duals I'm probably going to put back on, and I figure if I'm gonna go quieter I might as well look into being legal as well. A good low rumble without a sharp bark is what I'm thinking.
By the way, Arkansas law on mufflers is nothing but original type equipment mufflers allowed. Easy to enforce, but it's not enforced much unless you are showing off or just extremely loud.

One man's music is another man's noise. In an area in Phoenix, they set up noise microphones in an area known only for Harleys...
And I love hearing someone wind up a 180 hp inline 4, at least they are doing more than just making noise...
Sportbikes, coffee can muffler civics, and harleys will all be the reason why we will be running stock pipes someday.
BTW, JackPot 3.5" slip-ons w/ quiet baffles sound better, but are as quiet as stock...

..sorry Mike..I have to disagree too..I think we see it through a biased lens when it comes to Harley sound vs Jap...I worked a claims drive-through a few years ago that was right on the side of a busy main drag leading into Taunton Center in MA,(RT 138)..in the summer time, bikes were going up and down the road non-stop..I can't tell you how many times a Harley would go by while I was talking with a customer and the comments that I would hear about the noise were pretty nasty..almost never heard them when it was a rice rocket..and I must admit, it was incredible how loud some of these bikes were...especially the custom chopper types...
California is slated to be 2013-and-up since enforcement of existing models would create a nightmare for all involved.
Exactly....enforcement of the older models would be almost impossible, that means police would need to stop every bike, all the time.
When is the EPA going to pick on dump trucks and such. They spew diesel smoke and are crazy loud especiall f they use the engine brake....but no use motorcycle people get picked on.
I'm expecting the states to start enforcing the law to make money any time now.
This is a great way to see what your state and the states around you require motorcycles to comply with. My state is the only state out of about 15 I looked at that do not allow 2 abreast riding. California has all the restrictions but does not require eye protection. WTF
If you live in a state that list a db requirement and get a ticket you should argue it in court. These measurements are very difficult to measure or prove as ambient noise and surroundings have a huge effect on the accuracy of the readings. In most cases, when in court it will be an opinion of the arresting officer and that is easy to argue and get reduced or dismissed.

that is too funny. My loud bike sounds awesome and everybody loves it but your loud bike sounds like crap and everybody hates it LOL.
My barking dog has a cool bark and does not bug people when it barks but your dog has an irrating bark LOL.
Everybody likes country music and it is not annoying but that dang rock and roll that really pisses people off.

Not just dump trucks, all of those oversized diesel pick-up trucks made by the big three are louder than any set of pipes I've had on a bike. On top of that, it seems that all the guys around my area that own them are always on the pedal to hear themselves.
