Maybe the heat isn't a problem for some, but if we are all honest here - the heat is an issue.
Here is the honest part: The engine and exhaust pipes get hot.
Here is the not-so-honest part: If you don't swap out the headers and do a Stage 1, then your new Tourer is going to blow up.

OK, let me clarify. By moving, I mean highway speeds, not creeping along at a snail's pace in heavy traffic. If you're still running hot at highway speeds, then maybe you have other issues.
Rode an 07 Classic with a 96 for 8 days (stock rental). It was hot when stuck at a light, damn hot.
Now ride a 11 SG with a 103", all stock. Went with RJS Original heat deflectors as my first mod. They work and they mean it when they say "no more fried thighs".
I'm leaving it stock and running it with the RJS's ( in comfort) till it is time to sell it.
+1
Preach it, brother!
Personally, I use Captain Itch's Crotch Cooler and it delivers, as advertised.
U go with that, it's all about choices! For better or not, we all can use whatever ideas or theories that will lead to whatever results we end up with. Now I for one, live in a state where we can tune our bike without fear of goverment intervention. So I tune for what is best for my bike to live a long and healthy performing life. One that when I sell this bike, the new owner will still have a good strong motor with many thousands of "like new" performing miles!!

Not wanting to hijack the thread.... but .... NO !!!! Not on the newer bikes with lower gearing. On level roads you can run 6th gear at 55 mph all day long.

Cool, good info, Thanks. What is the new gearing? What was changed to achieve it? Sounds like the new 6th gear is about the same as my old 5th gear, if that's the case then there still is no benefit to having the new 6 speed, other than 1 extra gear to navigate through on the way to cruise.

I had an 05 before my 11, so that's what I'm basing this on..... what I notice is first gear is a little higher, and the spacing of the gears is a little closer together. You don't have to shift out of first as soon.
6th gear is somewhat higher than 5th on an 05. 55mph is around 2200 rpm, and 65 is around 2500 rpm.
Last winter and early spring when I was breaking in the 103 engine, the cool air kept the temps from the pipes from bothering me.
As soon as the heat of summer came upon Colorado, I really began to feel uncomfortable with the heat build-up from the restricted cat pipes.
Did a Stage One and installed the Jackpot Ceramic Coated head pipes and man, did I notice a drop of temp coming up at me!
The movement of heat out of the exhaust pipe rather than it collecting in the pipe and emanating upwards toward me was unbelievable!
I was in no rush to do a Stage One but as soon as I talked with Jamie at Fuel Moto and he told me about the big drop in temps with the Stage One and ceramic coated pipes, it was a no brainer for me.
Damn the government and EPA! Cats have no business in motorcycle pipes!

Me two! My 2010 Ultra in 6th does 2000 RPMs at 60 MPH and 2500 RPMs at 70 MPH up and down grades with no strain. It's worth the up grade to a new bike just for that.
...I thought my 05 was FREAKIN HOT! when I rolled out of the parking lot of Boston Harley, in May of 2005...then a few hears ago I got on a 2007, and that was WAY hotter...true-duals, a tuner, and a dyno made my heat go bye-bye though...
